The air in Washington D.C. was charged with anticipation on January 29, 1979. A gust of history was about to sweep through the city as President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter prepared to welcome Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping and his wife, Madame Zhuo Lin. The White House was set to host its highest-ranking Chinese visitor since 1943.
This moment was more than just ceremonial; it was symbolic of a world shifting on its axis. A significant change in international relations was occurring, pivoting on the unlikely fulcrum of roasted stuffed loin of veal.
But first, let’s set the context.
