1. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy at Creation. (Gen 2:1-3)
- Why did God rest? Looking back over creation - it is good.
- We are created in his image for a rhythm of work and holy rest.
2. God commanded the Israelites to keep the Sabbath day holy. (Ex 20:8-11)
- God created us and knows how we flourish.
- Embracing our God-given limits requires trust in God.
- To keep a Sabbath rest is to declare our freedom from slavery.
3. Jesus restored the heart of the Sabbath. (Mark 2:23-28)
- The Sabbath was created as a gift for mankind.
- A true Sabbath is filled with rest, delight, and worship.
- A day of rest requires planning and a battle of the mind.
4. The Sabbath is fulfilled in Christ.
- The Sabbath is a shadow of the true rest found in Christ. "for anyone who
enter's God's rest also rests form their works, just as God did from his." (Heb. 4:9-
10). All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by
his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. (Rom 3:23-24).
- The Gospel teaches us to rest in Christ's finished work of salvation. We must let
go of our inner striving to prove ourselves or to save the world - and trust Christ
to save our souls and rule the world.
5. When we create times of rest, delight, and worship we point to Christ and give people a taste of eternity.
- Sabbath is a taste of eternity.
- Example: Eric Liddel in "Chariots of Fire."
- When we keep times of Sabbath rest - any day - we make the invisible rest in
our heart visible for others - so we may all enjoy it together.
Practical Steps to create times of Sabbath rest:
1. Begin with worship, remind yourself who God is and who you are.
2. Balance Sabbath time (rest, delight, worship).
3. Build Sabbath time into each day.
4. Do Sabbath rest together / in community - brainstorm with friends and family - how can we create Sabbath rest in our lives? How can we create time for rest, delight, and worship together?

about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body
more than clothes?" Matthew 6:25.
2. Jesus connects worry to a lack of faith.
- How capable is Jesus?
- Can he handle this?
- How responsive?
- Does he care?
3. Jesus connects worry to pagan activity.
- Paganism - the belief that the god's must be appeased.
- You can trust Jesus.
- You do not need to get his attention.
- You do not need to appease his wrath.
4. An alternate pursuit.
- But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given
to you as well.
- What am I chasing?
- A new pursuit. I'm not seeking me, I'm seeking him.
