[…] Why did you make that decision? What was happening? Or why did your parents make that decision? Well, you know, this is 1977, post-Vietnam War, and our lives prior to that were really good. I mean, my parents were successful middle-class business people, and they had every intention of building a life for all of us there. And when that future looked bleak, they had no choice. but to make the incredibly difficult decision to get all of us out of there. And it was really traumatic. I was only seven years old. I didn't know what was going on. I wasn't given any information. All I knew was one day I was playing with my little brother and the next being woken up in the middle of the night, being carried over my dad's shoulder and carried into a waiting car. […]
