Inside the Training Lab: Data Governance and AI Ep.01
In this 4-part series, Kubrick Associate Principal Molly Slann explores the challenges that are emerging at the intersection of data governance and the rapid rise of AI technology.
To kick off the series, Molly welcomes Simon Duncan, Head of Data Management, to introduce the current state of data and AI governance. He reflects on how his experience supporting large scale Financial Services organizations to handle GDPR has shaped his design of Kubrick’s Data Management practice, and how we can take learnings from past regulatory upheaval to enable safe, fair, and transparent AI implementation.
They discuss the objective and subjective aspects of defining governance, such as what it means to be ‘human-centric’ and ‘trustworthy’- two key words from the upcoming EU AI Act, which is set to influence governance in the UK and the US. Molly and Simon also consider the power of technology to improve governance itself, such as Governance-as-Code, which is included in the training of Kubrick’s first cohort of Analytics and Governance Engineering (https://www.kubrickgroup.com/us/insights/evolving-data-ecosystem) consultants (based in their US office). While AI technology can self-learn to implement data management requirements like Data Quality dimensions, the need for human intervention and validation is critical. Moreover, the need for domain expertise in governance to influence technology decision makers will be greater than ever.
Join us next week, where Molly and Simon will pick up the conversation to discuss ‘Unpeopled Governance’ and delve into the technology and – ethics - of AI-powered governance.

Kubrick Voices Ep 07 - Maximising impact through data transformation
Last month, we released a case study regarding the ongoing voluntary engagement we’ve been working on with award-winning digital content provider and UK charity Medical Aid Films.
This engagement has been hugely rewarding for both parties, and in the below video podcast (link shared in the comments section) @andy and @elmira discuss the steps that they, plus other consultants, took to help Medical Aid Films transform.
We also received some excellent feedback from Catherine McCarthy, CEO of Medical Aid Films, regarding the engagement, which we have shared in the below video. This feedback reflects the amount of time and commitment that has gone into this engagement, and the overall impact it has had on the charity.
Lastly, Head of Success at Kubrick - Barbara Elson sets the scene for the podcast, outlining the overarching purpose of the engagement and key deliverables.
Thank you once again to everyone that participated in this engagement, and to Medical Aid Films for giving us the opportunity to give back to such an important cause.

Kubrick Voices Ep 03
This time on Kubrick Voices, Camilla Dickson (https://www.linkedin.com/company/10698880/admin/#) is joined by Alex Taylor (https://www.linkedin.com/company/10698880/admin/#), Senior Customer Success Manager for Microsoft Azure, and Kubrick’s own Jay Lockwood (https://www.linkedin.com/company/10698880/admin/#), Global Head of Channel Alliance. They both share a passion and personal investment in improving inclusion and access to technology roles.
After studying law, Alex, who entered the technology industry, reflects on the transferable skills she has applied to her career at Microsoft and the importance of championing the diversity of thought and expression in the workplace, rather than suppressing it. As a former educator, Jay considers the actions we can take to support young people at an earlier stage to encourage them into technology roles, and how to create a more inclusive system that accommodates for various challenges that young people face today.
If you're at the start of your career and are thinking about a role in technology, or would like to pivot your career into a new area but aren't sure if your skills could translate then we'd strongly recommend giving this episode a watch or listen.
