गुलज़ार साहब की बहुत ही सुंदर कविता जिसमें इंसान और प्रकृति रूपी ईश्वर के संघर्ष को शतरंज की बाज़ी के रूप में वर्णित किया गया है I इंसान ने पहले अँधेरे को हराया, प्रलय का सामना किया, चाँद पर पहुंच गया और अंत में वो आखिरी चाल यानी मौत से भी नहीं डरता क्योंकि कवि कहते हैं कि शरीर तो नश्वर है,आत्मा को कैसे मारोगे? इंसान की अंदरूनी ताकत और हिम्मत को बखूबी दर्शाती है ये कविता।
