Amparo cada día está más cansada de que Baltasar ponga excusas para hacer pública su relación. Baltasar se ve con la joven Josefina, que podría ser en breve una rica heredera y que pertenece a su clase. En la fábrica hay un gran enfrentamiento porque llevan meses sin cobrar el jornal. Amparo es la líder sindical de las cigarreras, pero en la lucha se puede perder mucho y las compañeras tienen miedo. En su vida sentimental también hay dificultades; Baltasar da largas y no asume su responsabilidad como pareja. Amparo se queda embarazada.

La Tribuna - Capítulo 3: Sueños
Amparo está más sola desde que su padre ha muerto. Rechaza a Chinto, un chico humilde que ayuda en la casa y con los barquillos desde que ella trabaja en la fábrica de tabacos; Chinto es un simple barquillero, y ella quiere romper con su pasado, prosperar. Poco a poco nota que se está enamorando de Baltasar, que es de otra clase social. Pero ella tiene esperanzas: cuando llegue la República habrá libertad, se terminarán las diferencias sociales y podrán ser pareja. A Baltasar le persigue su fama de mujeriego, y a pesar de las dudas sobre sus intenciones, Amparo acepta comenzar una relación con él.

La Tribuna - Capítulo 2: Libertad
Amparo entra a trabajar en la Fábrica de Tabacos de Marineda gracias a la recomendación de Borrén, un amigo de Baltasar. Allí empieza a tomar posturas activas frente a las injusticias laborales. Hace que las cigarreras tomen conciencia de la situación política y social mediante lecturas y discursos. Amparo también se implica políticamente con unos delegados que llegan desde Cantabria: el camino para avanzar socialmente es la República Federal.
