Strumming Paris: Tim Watt on Life, Lyrics & the City of Light

In the heart of Paris, where art and culture flourish, a musician from England has found his rhythm and voice. Tim Watt, a seasoned performer, shares his journey of embracing the Parisian music scene, writing his first song in French, and finding inspiration in the City of Light. A Musical Evolution Tim Watt’s musical journey began over two decades ago, rooted in the bands of high school and branching into various projects. His passion for solo music and live performances sprouted locally in Hertfordshire, England, before daring to explore beyond the UK. From the lively atmosphere of London to the vibrant cities of Las Vegas and New York, Tim’s experiences have enriched his artistry with global flair. In 2012, fate led Tim to Paris for his first performance, where he met his future wife. The allure of the city grew with each visit, and by 2013, Tim and his wife decided to make Paris their home, opening up a new chapter in his musical endeavors. Breaking into the Parisian Music Scene Adapting to Paris presented challenges, especially with the language barrier. However, over the years, Tim embraced his French roots, which allowed him to connect more intimately with his audience. His language journey led him to write his first song in French, “Je n’ai pas les mots pour dire.” This new venture not only enriched his repertoire but also deepened his connection with his Parisian audience. The Creative Process of Songwriting Tim’s songwriting process is akin to a meticulous sculptor, taking time to refine his art. Inspired by legends like Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, Tim strives to reach artistic heights while maintaining his unique voice. For him, songwriting is an intimate experience, a channeling process that taps into something greater, bringing forth ideas that are shaped, honed, and immortalized through his careful attention. Inspiration in the Hidden Gems of Paris While mainstream attractions captivate tourists, Tim finds his muse in the lesser-known 19th arrondissement, a district rich in culture and imbued with the essence of the working-class community. From leisurely walks along the canal to the vibrant arts scene, this part of Paris offers an oasis of inspiration away from the bustling crowds. Reflections on the Evolving Music Scene Since his early performances, Tim has witnessed significant changes in the music landscape. The advent of digital technology and smartphones has altered audience interactions, presenting new challenges and opportunities. Despite such changes, Paris offers a unique experience for music lovers and performers alike, with a rich tapestry of genres ranging from jazz to electro. For those visiting Paris and seeking live music venues, Tim recommends exploring the open mic scene, where surprises and connections abound. These venues provide intimate settings to experience raw talent and offer inspiration to both spectators and aspiring musicians. A Glimpse into Tim’s Future As Tim continues to evolve, he cherishes the journey taken and the creativity expressed. His work seamlessly intertwines with his daily life, balancing office responsibilities with the poetic soul of a musician. The journey is as rewarding as it is challenging, and each performance is a testament to his passion and dedication. Painting the French Countryside with Janis Commentz

In the world of art, inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places. For artist Janis Commentz, the French countryside serves as a canvas for her watercolor paintings and a muse for her creative journey. Having originally traveled to Paris with a passion for capturing the essence of its streets, Janis now finds herself exploring the breadth of France, from the bustling markets of Paris to the tranquil retreats of lesser-known villages. A Journey Through France Janis’s journey across France began with a simple idea: to capture the country’s scenic beauty in a yearly watercolor calendar. Having returned to France in 2018 with only a watercolor pad and paints for ease of travel, she fell in love with the medium, creating a calendar for family and friends. The positive response spurred her to continue the tradition, making it a ritual each year. Her travels have taken her from Paris to places like La Rochelle and the small villages along the Euro Velo trails. With each new location, Janis finds fresh inspiration, whether through direct observation, such as meticulously sketching cathedral interiors, or revisiting photographs of past travels. Artistic Growth and Connections This exploratory spirit not only broadens her artistic horizons but also deepens her connections with individuals she meets on her travels. Janis recounts delightful encounters, like meeting another artist from Joshua Tree in Paris, which demonstrate the serendipitous nature of travel. Her experience emphasizes the importance of remaining open to new experiences and conversations. During her travels, Janis has learned that sometimes the most fulfilling interactions stem from spontaneous exchanges with strangers. Embracing the Art of Solo Travel Janis encourages everyone, especially older women who dream of traveling alone, to take the plunge. The freedom of solo travel allows her to make spontaneous plans and follow paths less traveled. This freedom aids in her artistic expression and gives her the courage to try new things, like experimenting with abstract street scenes using children’s watercolor sets purchased at a local Monoprix. Upcoming Ventures and Opportunities Beyond painting France’s landscapes, Janis finds joy in sharing her art online and building connections with fellow art enthusiasts. Her watercolor of the Musée Cluny garden was recently featured by the museum on its Instagram account, a testament to the power of artist collaborations and online community building. Janis’s creativity extends into future projects, such as a potential book based on her travels, another calendar, and an art exhibit combining her desert and French works. She also plans to attend an art residency in Provence, an opportunity that will allow her to absorb new influences and continue evolving her art. Connect with Janis For those inspired by Janis’s journey or interested in her artwork, there are several ways to connect and explore her creations. Janis’s website, janiscommentz.com (https://www.janiscommentz.com/), is the central hub for her artwork and calendar purchases. Follow her artistic journey on Instagram at @janiscommentz (https://www.instagram.com/janiscommentz/). You can also subscribe to her monthly reflections on art and travel through her Substack publication, titled “Encouragement Only,” which can be found here (https://substack.com/@janiscommentz2?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAacJhNyY3BABPMA2w2J7MOejBMOCLWlt6tgIu21WzUTJ-rGEf18DB4xRRkEqXw_aem_8YERx4AmdWmYImOG-hGaOQ). Janis Commentz’s artistic endeavors illustrate the profound connection between travel and creativity. By exploring the French countryside, she rekindles a passion for painting and discovers inspiration in the tranquility and diversity of her surroundings. Her story is a reminder of the joy that comes from pursuing one’s passions and sharing them with the world. This is a public episode.
