S2E6 introducing Olive Bieringa
This is the sixth episode of the second season of the LACE Symposium podcast, the official podcast of the LACE Symposium for Dance and Other Contemporary Practices. In this episode you’ll be hearing from pavleheidler (they/them) and Olive Bieringa (she/they). Olive will be sharing their contribution entitled Resisting Extinction on the 31st of July, a Friday, at 11AM. Olive and pav talk about relations, between the macro and the micro, between feelings and aesthetics, between humans and rocks. And trees. They talk about identity as that which emerges in relation, about how one person, for example, may bring something out of you than another may not. About the way landscape can do the same. They talk about communicating non-verbally, about touching, and being, and dialoguing. We talked about Body-Mind Centering®, or goal-oriented and process-oriented strategies. And ethics. And childhood. Close to the end of their conversations, when talking about the three As—art, academia, and activism—the idea forms, that we should be approaching all the As as amateurs, meaning the lovers of. Imagine a fourth A in the triangle of As. What if this symposium is not a meeting of experts, but a meeting of the lovers of art, academia, and activism? Olive Bieringa (https://lacesymposium.com/team/olive-bieringa) works at the intersection of creative practice and pedagogy in dance, performance, somatics and media. She holds a BA in Dance from European Dance Development Center in the Netherlands and an MFA in Performance and New Media at Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. She is a doctoral candidate at Uniarts, Helsinki. She is Certified Movement Therapist (ISMETA), Infant Developmental Movement Educator® and Body-Mind Centering® Teacher and Program Director of Somatic Education Australasia. She founded BodyCartography in 1997 in San Francisco. The LACE Symposium is curated by Deirdre Morris (she/they), Sylvia Scheidl (she/her), and pavleheidler (they/them). LACE #4 is made in partnership with PART International Art Residency Austria, and ImPulsTanz — Vienna International Dance Festival! Funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or OeAD-GmbH. S2E4 introducing Zrinka Šimičić
This is the fourth episode of the second season of the LACE Symposium podcast, the official podcast of the LACE Symposium for Dance and Other Contemporary Practices. In this episode, Deirdre Morris (she/they)—artist, body worker, and curator of the LACE Symposium—talks to Zrinka Šimičić (she/her). Zrinka Šimičić is a Zagreb-based dance artist, educator and somatic practitioner. She trained at Laban/Bartenieff Somatic Studies International and completed the SME and IDME programs, and is in the process of completing the Practitioner Program at the School for Body-Mind Centering®. Her artistic research and teaching emerge from an ongoing inquiry into the processes that shape our experience of the living body in and as community, with particular attention to the dynamic between shared and personal dimensions. She collaborates and teaches across diverse contexts, working with students, professional and amateur dancers, children and vulnerable groups. She is the founder of the SomaHut initiative, co-founder of the Improspekcije improvisation festival, and artistic director of Multimedia Hut. She is a faculty member at the Academy of Dramatic Art Zagreb (Dance Department) and also teaches in postgraduate programs in Dance Movement Psychotherapy in Zagreb and Osijek. Zrinka and Deirdre discuss Zrinka’s work with the SomaHut initiative in Zagreb, Croatia. SomaHut (https://somahut.org/) aims to connect diverse communities—especially those less familiar with embodied practices—through art and somatic experiences. They reflect on the transformative nature of embodied learning and explore cellular consciousness, cellular identity, the fluidity of boundaries, and the interconnectedness of individuals within a group. The conversation also touches on the role of somatics in understanding how knowledge is created, and the importance of embracing uncertainty and the space between the known and unknown. Zrinka’s contribution to LACE #4: Fractalising Touch symposium, entitled Od Stanice do Zajednice, will take place on the 30th of July, a Thursday, at 11AM. S2E3 introducing Kerstin Kussmaul
This is the third episode of the second season of the LACE Symposium podcast, the official podcast of the LACE Symposium for Dance and Other Contemporary Practices. In this episode, pavleheidler (they/them) (ADHD-autism)—artist, body worker, and curator of the LACE Symposium—talks to Kerstin Kussmaul (she/her). Kerstin is a dance researcher and artist whose work focuses on somatics and embodiment. Her most recent work, the matter of fascia, emerged from this research and can be accessed at www.fasciamatters.info (http://www.fasciamatters.info/). Kerstin collaborated with artists such as Jan Burkhardt, Lizz Roman, Nita Little, and the collective SOMEX (Sabina Holzer, Mariella Greil, maRia Probst, Sylvia Scheidl, among others), as well as many further collaborators from dance and somatic practices. She is the director of the Embodied Myoreflex Practitioner training program, developed in collaboration with Dr Mosetter (Konstanz) and ImPulsTanz. Parts of the training take place at Artis Umbria (http://artisumbria.com/), which she is developing as an ecosomatic site for movement and non-doing. Kerstin Kussmaul is the founder of IDOCDE and its associated symposium, now known as the LACE Symposium for Dance and Other Contemporary Practices. You can read the origin story of the LACE Symposium here (https://lacesymposium.com/background). In this episode, pav and Kerstin talk about absence, presence, and agential cuts, as they reflect on Kerstin’s interest in the nature of things. What is a thing? What is not a thing? And how do the two relate to one another? pav asks about gardening, which becomes a metaphorical bridge linking different fields of interests explored in this conversation. What happens if I compare soil to the extracellular matrix? Did observing your garden inform the way you’re able to observe the people you work with? and, as a manual therapist, the people you touch? How did gardening inform the way you’re able to work with time, to know time? and its impact on growth and healing? and how do you think these days about the what separates and what merges art, academia, and activism? In the promotional image, Kerstin is holding a T-shirt they wore to the Venice Biennale in protest of the removal of Gabrielle Goliath’s work from the South African pavilion over—according to the Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2026/mar/25/south-african-work-banned-from-venice-biennale-to-be-shown-outside-main-event)—”its supposedly ‘highly divisive’ tribute to a Palestinian poet” Heba Abunada. Printed on the back of the T-shirt—in the original Arabic and English translation—is an excerpt of a poem written by Heba Abunada. Goliath’s contribution to the South African pavilion, Elegy (https://www.e-flux.com/announcements/6787199/gabrielle-goliathelegy), was to celebrate the lives of a number of women, including Heba Abunada, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis, Gaza, in October 2023. Elegy was put up as an independent exhibition (https://www.elegyinvenice.com/) in Venice, at Chiesa di Sant’Antonin, and will remain on display until July 31st . Kerstin’s contribution to LACE #4: Fractalising Touch, entitled What Is Not A Thing (Fascial Ontologies of the Interstitial) on the 31st of July, a Friday, at 2.30PM. The LACE Symposium is curated by Deirdre Morris (she/they), Sylvia Scheidl (she/her), and pavleheidler (they/them). S2E2 introducing Stéphanie Janaina
This is the second episode of the second season of the LACE Symposium podcast, the official podcast of the LACE Symposium for Dance and Other Contemporary Practices. In this episode, Deirdre Morris (she/they)—artist, body worker, and curator of the LACE Symposium—talks to Stéphanie Janaina (she/her) about working in the heat, about sighing, the rhythms and melodies of everyday sounds, like the sound of a keyboard and the click of a mouse. Deirdre and Stéphanie talk about experimenting with words, taking care of words, and the power of words, particularly about the ability words have to evoke emotions and experiences. They discuss the impact of words on individuals, emphasizing the importance of understanding and redefining personal definitions of words like “violence” and “fragility.” Listening to their conversation, I—pavleheidler (they/them), host of the podcast and curator of the LACE Symposium—get a sense of intimate personhood emerging in the aura surrounding words, something like a sense of “wordial” agency. Words, as I’m imagining them right now, are messengers, helping us communicate with each other across temporal and spatial boundaries . Stéphanie works with the body, memory, and language as territories where identity is both affirmed and unsettled. Through performance, she explores ways of inhabiting other languages and making visible what has been silenced by history or violence. In her work, the body becomes archive and bridge, holding memory and imagining more sensitive modes of existing together. She studies the Mixtec language, variant Tnu’u Dau, as a choreographic and affective device: a way of keeping alive the dialogue with her grandmother and with a collective history. Having contributed to LACE #2: Mediating Touch, this is Stéphanie’s second contribution to the LACE Symposium. Stéphanie’s contribution to LACE #4: Fractalising Touch, entitled Composted Identities, will take place on the 28th of July, a Tuesday, at 2.30PM. The LACE Symposium is curated by Deirdre Morris (she/they), Sylvia Scheidl (she/her), and pavleheidler (they/them). LACE #4 is made in partnership with PART International Residency Austria, and ImPulsTanz — Vienna International Dance Festival! Funded by the European Union. S2E1 introducing Ella Hillström
This is the first episode of the second season of the LACE Symposium podcast, the official podcast of the LACE Symposium for Dance and Other Contemporary Practices. In this episode, the host pavleheidler (https://lacesymposium.com/team/pavleheidler) (they/them) (adhd/autism)—dance artist, educator, and curator of the LACE Symposium—talks to Ella Hillström (https://lacesymposium.com/team/ella-hillstrm) (she/her). Ella is a PhD candidate in Social Anthropology at Stockholm University. Her research examines the repair of cleft lip and palate—the most common congenital facial anomaly—to explore broader questions about the social construction of faces. She is interested in creative practices in her research and works with somatic and speculative methodologies. She is also a member of the research collective For the Love of Inquiry (F.L.I.-labs), and has a movement-research practice with Yari Stilo. * Ella and pav talk about the face, about the ways in which we come to know a face, our face, about the completeness and the incompleteness of what makes a face. They talk about degrees of fiction, about the way we relate to lived experience in the context of academic research, and some of the ways somatics and Body-Mind Centering® in particular help ella develop her practice and her work. * Ella’s contribution to LACE #4: Fractalising Touch (https://lacesymposium.com/blog/lace-4-schedule), entitled Knowing the Face Otherwise, will take place on the 27th of July, a Thursday, at 2.30PM. * The LACE Symposium is curated by Deirdre Morris (she/they), Sylvia Scheidl (she/her), and pavleheidler (they/them). LACE #4 is made in partnership with PART International Residency Austria, and ImPulsTanz — Vienna International Dance Festival! Funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or OeAD-GmbH.
