Hij zit de modernisten duidelijk in de weg en zijn succes met zijn bekendste roman De komst van Joachim Stiller waarin een Christusfiguur uit het graf herrijst, maakt het alleen maar ingewikkelder. Ook zijn magisch realisme wordt niet altijd begrepen. Hubert Lampo is een gevoelig man en lijdt onder het schervengericht.
