And it's a global show that grabs so much attention every four years. <br>It's a show that Ireland are missing out and looking at the group that they would have been in - alongside Mexico, South Korea and South Africa - it really is a missed opportunity. <br>Steven and Alan have been watching as much of it as they can, though the time difference is making things difficult. <br>But they're back with their own observations as the group stages move to Round 2. <br>Everything from Al Queda to Alan Shearer, Dubs playing in the World Cup to overweight Mexicans and posh Americans to African geopolitical history get a mention. </p>

Glory for local clubs | World Cup fever | Steven's memories
<p>After a three month hiatus, the Laois Soccer Podcast returns just in time for the start of the World Cup. </p><p>The biggest competition in the world gets underway at 8pm this evening as Mexico, one of the hosts, take on South Africa. </p><p>It is bittersweet for Ireland fans as this is the group that we would have been in should we have come through the playoffs. </p><p>On the domestic front, Alan Hartnett is joined by Steven Miller to discuss the end of the season. </p><p>Stradbally Town were the big winners with three trophies while Rosenallis also secured the Division 1 Cup. </p><p>But the biggest prize of them all went to Clonaslee United who won the Combined Counties Cup for the first time in their history. </p>

JP Cushen - almost 30 years following the Irish soccer team around Europe
<p>JP Cushen can vividly recall the first time he ever watched the Ireland soccer team in the flesh. <br>He was a primary school student in Stradbally and it was a friendly against Wales in the old Lansdowne Road, a midweek afternoon kick off as the stadium then didn't have floodlights. It was ahead of the 1990 World Cup. Ireland won 1-0 thanks to a penalty from Bernie Slaven. Cushen was hooked and has followed Ireland all over the continent ever since. <br>He is a season ticket holder with the FAI and was a founding member of the Laois branch of the Republic of Ireland Supporters club. <br>As he prepares to head to Prague this week for the World Cup qualifier against Czechia, he joins us to chat about his various experiences over the years, including trips to Euro 2012 and 2016 in Poland and France and trips to the likes of Bulgaria, Armenia, Malta, Italy and, of course, Hungary for that famous win last November. </p>
