At first, the screen was enough.We looked through a window and told something on the other side where to go. Then we became impatient with the distance.Keyboard became mouse. Mouse became controller. Controller became touch. Touch became movement. Movement became eyes.Every new interface removed a little more of itself.That is what good interfaces do: they make us forget that they are there.But imagine that we succeed almost completely.Perfect image. The Iron Test | Transhumation Artifact No. 6
Every night, the world disappears. And sometimes another one takes its place. An iron works all day. We unplug it. It rests. It never dreams. We often describe ourselves using almost the same mechanical language. We are exhausted. We switch off. We recharge. We sleep so the biological machine can repair itself and begin again in the morning. There is only one problem. The machine does not actually switch off. During sleep, the brain remains active, moving through changing states associated with memory, learning, emotion and bodily regulation. Dreams emerge from that biological activity. There is no scientific reason to invoke a soul leaving the body, an external simulation, or consciousness operating independently of the brain. But after removing those tempting explanations, something remarkable is still sitting on the table. Your body can remain in one dark bedroom while your experience contains a railway station, a childhood kitchen, a beach, another person's face, or a corridor that has never existed. You can run while your legs remain beneath the duvet. Touch a wall that is nowhere near your hand. Look through eyes that are closed. Long before cinema, television, computer screens or virtual reality, biology already possessed the ability to generate an experienced environment without that environment being present before the senses in the ordinary waking way. Technology did not invent virtuality. It may be learning how to enter a territory biology already knew. That does not prove that mind and brain are separate. It reveals a more modest — and perhaps more interesting — distinction: The body and the experience of having a body are not exactly the same thing. Artifact 05, The Seven Gates, asked what could be removed while you remained you. Artifact 06 removes something different. The room. The current visual world. The sounds around you. The immediate environment supplying your experience. And sometimes, instead of nothing, another world begins. So perhaps sleep is more than the story we casually tell ourselves about a biological machine stopping to regenerate. Because an iron rests. And it never wakes up remembering Paris. The Seven Gates | Transhumation Artifact No. 5
How much can be removed before the person who passes through is no longer the person who entered? A watch. A phone. A coat. Glasses. These are easy. But what happens when there is nothing physical left to place on the table? The Seven Gates begins with one of humanity's oldest stories—not to explain ancient mythology, but to ask a question modern technology has still not answered. Thousands of years ago, Inanna—later associated with Ishtar—passed through seven gates, surrendering symbols of power one by one. This Artifact does not retell that legend. It transforms its structure into an experiment about identity. Modern medicine already replaces parts of the human body without declaring that a different person has appeared. Artificial joints. Pacemakers. Transplants. Prosthetic limbs. So where is the boundary? What if we remove memory? Language? Personality? And if every measurable piece can eventually be copied, have we preserved a person—or only created a perfect duplicate? Perhaps the real question is not whether consciousness can be uploaded. Perhaps the real question is what must survive every gate for the traveler to remain the same traveler. This is the fifth Artifact in the Transhumation series—and the midpoint of the first season. Like every Artifact before it, it refuses to provide an answer. Instead, it leaves one final door closed.
