[…] That brings us to autoimmune. Autos meaning self. Immune coming from Latin immunus, meaning exempt or free from duty or burden. The word belongs to a family associated with munus, a duty, a service, or an obligation. Before immunity became a medical concept, its vocabulary concerned exemption. Someone could be exempt from a public obligation. Later, the word would develop into familiar medical association with protection from disease. Autoimmune, therefore, combines a Greek element referring to the self with a Latin word whose history concerns exemption and protection. But the modern medical meaning concerns immune responses directed against the body's own components. […]
