Central American Latines: Poetry by Janel Pineda

Bienvenidas, bienvenidos, bienvenides. Welcome back everyone! We’re glad you can join us as we begin our 11th season of the podcast! This semester our focus is on Central American Latine communities. We decided to focus on Central America, as a self criticism because the region has been profoundly shaped by U.S. political, military, and economic intervention, yet its histories and communities remain underrepresented in scholarly conversations, in our classes and within our podcast itself. Focusing on Central America helps challenge the tendency to treat Latines as a homogeneous group by highlighting the experiences of migration, civil war, displacement, indigeneity, and diaspora that have shaped Salvadoran, Guatemalan, Honduran, Nicaraguan, and other Central American communities. It also allows us to better understand how empire, race, language, and migration intersect across the Americas. At a moment when Central Americans constitute a significant and growing part of the Latine population in the United States, their stories should not be addressed as peripheral concerns but a crucial lens through which to examine the histories, inequalities, and cultural formations that define both the region and the United States itself. In This Episode we discuss the poetry chapbook, Lineage of Rain, by Janel Pineda. We start out with a brief biography of the poet and some context about the book itself. Then we analyze and discuss a handful of the poems from the collection. Rojo looks at three poems that examine the power of English and its often violent histories, specifically in connection with Salvadoran history, and reflects on the intergenerational impact of language imperialism. Rebecca addresses three poems that focus on family, specifically the importance of sibling relationships for the poet. Her goal is to highlight the joy the poet feels from these relationships and to emphasize the importance of community in the creation of this joy. At the end, we talk about the poem “Fellowship Application,” which seems like a poem that might resonate with many of our students. Puertorriqueñas: Chicago Poet Laureate Mayda del Valle

As an ending to our season dedicated to Puertorriqueñas, we dedicate this episode to the renowned spoken word poet, bomba player, and educator, Mayda del Valle, the most recent poet laureate of Chicago, who in her work  introduces a sense of knowledge rooted in the street vernacular of Black Diasporican communities during the Hip Hop era. We first talk about del Valle’s background, who she is, the art she creates, and what it means to her to bring these two things together in her poetry. Then we dig into the role of Puerto Ricans in the hip-hop and post-soul scene of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. This helps contextualize the work that Del Valle has created and the ways in which her generation has built new forms of expression that address the world in which they came up in. Finally, we explore and analyze a number of Del Valle’s poems considering the ways in which her poetry bridges culture, place, and generation and the role that music and food play in understanding Diasporicanness. Bonus: Consider a Major or Minor in BLS: A Conversation with Baruch BLS Students

As we gear up for fall registration, we wanted to highlight some of the many reasons that students at Baruch College choose to study Black and Latinx Studies. This episode is divided in two conversations: the first with BLS major Kaitlyn Moran and LTS minor Isai Ajpacaja, and the second with BLS minor Derek Fernandez. The students share what led them to taking classes in the BLS Department, some stand out moments from their favorite courses, and why they believe that other students should take a course or two (or ten!).
