2000 Miles for Mental Health
<p>Welcome back to the podcast, my people! Episode 49 is here. Have you ever met someone who's walked over <b>2,000 miles</b>? Today you have. We sit down with Callum, better known as <b>Backpack Boz</b>, who walked over 2,000 miles across America, from outside the White House in Washington, D.C., all the way to Brownsville, Texas, to raise awareness for men's mental health.</p> <p>In this episode, we talk about what inspired Callum to take on such an incredible challenge, the physical and mental battles he faced along the way, the people he met throughout his journey, and the moments that pushed him to keep putting one foot in front of the other. But this wasn't just a story about walking. Halfway through his journey, while in Memphis, Callum was abandoned by the charity he was walking for. Suddenly, he found himself alone in a foreign country with no funding, no support, and nowhere to go. What began as a journey to raise awareness for men's mental health quickly became a journey of survival.</p> <p>We also dive into the wider conversation around men's mental health, why it continues to be such a significant issue, not only here in the UK but across the world. Being from Liverpool, a city where Callum has personally lost many people in his life to mental health struggles, this cause became deeply personal. <p>Welcome back to the podcast my people. Episode 48 is here, and this one is a powerful conversation around politics, resilience, and using your voice.</p> <p>Today we are joined by Afzal Khan. Afzal has had a remarkable career in public service. He worked as a solicitor, became the first British Asian Lord Mayor of Manchester, served as a Member of the European Parliament from 2014 to 2017, and was elected to the UK Parliament in 2017, where he has served ever since.</p> <p>In this episode we go deeper into his personal journey, from moving to the UK from Kashmir, Pakistan at a young age to building a life through hard work and determination. We talk about his early experiences working a range of jobs, including in a mill, as a bus driver, and as a police officer, before going on to study law and qualify as a solicitor.</p> <p>We discuss how that journey led him into politics and how overcoming adversity shaped his mindset and purpose.
