   Brian Clough Walking on Water

Rob pays tribute to the legendary English football manager, Brian Clough. Rob reflects on Clough's upbringing in a working-class family, his incredible goal-scoring record as a player, and his subsequent rise to become one of the greatest football managers in history. Rob delves into Clough's successful principles, such as his emphasis on recruiting good players and his belief in the importance of the spine of a team. He also explores Clough's challenges, including his infamous 44 days at Leeds United and his struggles with alcohol. Through personal anecdotes and insights from Clough's autobiography, Riles provides listeners with a deeper understanding of the enigmatic and influential figure that was Brian Clough. KEY TAKEAWAYS Brian Clough was a highly successful football manager who achieved great success with Derby County and Nottingham Forest. Clough believed in recruiting good players and letting them play, emphasizing the importance of having talented individuals in the team. He had a strong partnership with Peter Taylor, who complemented Clough's strengths and weaknesses, leading to their success as a managerial duo. Clough's management style was simple and focused on man management rather than complex coaching systems. Despite his success, Clough's ego and personal issues, including his struggles with alcohol, affected his relationships and ultimately led to his downfall. BEST MOMENTS "He was outspoken. He was a rebel. He was talented and successful." "Clough recruited good players and got two, three, and more years out of them than anybody else believed was possible." "He admits he was egotistical. He admits he didn't listen. And he admits now he did it the wrong way." "He often sent flowers to wives and his way of getting an influence over the player was to speak to the player's wife." "He was an unorthodox. He would pull no punches and he would be demanding in terms of what he wanted."
