He Studied AI in 1996: What Non-Technical Leaders Get Wrong About What AI Can Do
What does someone who was studying artificial intelligence in 1996 see that the rest of us are missing? Meet Sai Prakash, CTO and co-founder of MindStaq, six years at Microsoft, and a Master of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science from Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning. Host Ralph E. Owens II and co-host Terry Baylor open a series of conversations with him here, starting with his story. It begins in a small, free university in India, in an AI lab that existed only because a grant required it, on machines that would not, in his words, "hold a candle to your iPhone." His class of 24 went on to Intel, Nvidia, Google, and DeepMind. Sai's read on the AI winter that followed: the ideas were sound, the hardware was too expensive, and when hardware finally caught up, software did not. "We're stuck in these monopolistic definitions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel. I'm like, can we do better?" He grew up on Isaac Asimov and still carries two things from those books: that people were "always central to that thesis," and a 1970s warning about "a cult of anti intellectualism in America where one person's ignorance is as good as another's knowledge." His concern today: "we've got this powerful technology, but we're not thinking hard enough about how it's used, how it's positioned." That thinking became MindStaq. It started with a question, "where's the Star Trek computer?", a scene from The Matrix, and a Sanskrit word for consciousness. How those connect closes this episode and opens the next one. ****************************** 🎯 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE What an AI lab in India in 1996 looked like, and why it existed at all Why the AI winter was a hardware and cost problem, not a failure of ideas Where the 24 people in Sai's class ended up, and what that says about latent expertise How Isaac Asimov's fiction shaped a working technologist's view of what AI is for The Asimov warning about expertise that describes most meetings you sit in today The Star Trek question that started MindStaq Why Sai says "there is no document, there is no file" What "citta" means and why a company was named for it ****************************** 👥 WHO THIS EPISODE IS FOR Directors and VPs asked to sponsor or approve AI without an engineering background Leaders who have sat through a vendor demo and could not tell staged output from real capability Executives deciding whether an initiative failed on merit or on cost Technology leaders who keep buying faster infrastructure and never ask what runs on top of it Anyone who will be asked this week what they think about AI ****************************** 🎧 THE REST OF THIS CONVERSATION This is the first of an ongoing series with Sai Prakash. Leading the Soul: How to Retain Young Talent When Compensation Has Stopped Working
What do you do when you have raised the offer, fixed the title, funded the retention bonus, and your best people still leave? Most leaders are solving a compensation problem that was never a compensation problem. Pay clears a barrier. It has never created a reason to stay. Those are two different jobs, and only one of them can be bought. In this episode, host Ralph E. Owens II and co-host Terry Baylor close out a four part conversation with Lawrence Scott, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, a former Army officer, and a John Maxwell Team certified coach who has spent over a decade developing athletes, executives, and leadership teams. Lawrence has led inside four institutions that rarely speak to each other, the military, the church, professional sports, and corporate America, which gives him an unusually complete view of what each one gets right and what each one leaves broken. His argument starts somewhere uncomfortable. It does not start with the disengaged employee. It starts with the executive, and with a word he says corporate America quietly redefined. Care used to mean something internal. It got translated into compensation and external incentives, and then leaders began wondering why paying more stopped producing loyalty. He calls the alternative leading the soul. Then the harder claim. When experienced leaders bristle at a younger workforce chasing meaning, Lawrence argues it is not stubbornness. It is grief. An entire generation suppressed its own fulfillment to succeed in this economy, nobody ever named the cost, and watching someone refuse to make that trade now registers as an accusation. If I had to let go of myself for this, then you do too. He does not leave it as a diagnosis. He tells the story of a man who built an oil company in Texas, sold it for a couple hundred million dollars, and came to him in tears in his sixties over a single chapter on peace. He had the money. The family was good. Everyone relied on him and everyone was taken care of. He pointed at that chapter and said he did not have that. You cannot hand someone a sense of meaning you have never located in yourself. That makes retention an internal problem long before it is ever a programmatic one. ****************************** 🎯 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE Why compensation clears a barrier but never creates a reason to stay The real reason experienced leaders resist the younger workforce's search for meaning What leading the soul means, and how internal incentivization differs from external reward Why care inside most organizations quietly became a synonym for pay What a P and L statement would look like if a leader actually cared for their people The difference between standards, preferences, and principles, and why it governs decision speed Why you can never criticize a seat you do not sit in ****************************** 👥 WHO THIS EPISODE IS FOR Directors, VPs, and executives who own a retention number that has stopped responding to compensation Leaders managing across three or four generations who feel the gap and cannot name it Senior leaders who have quietly wondered whether the trade they made to get here was worth it Professionals trying to understand the leader above them instead of resenting them ****************************** 🎧 THE REST OF THIS CONVERSATION This episode closes out a four part conversation. You're Not Responsible For What They Broke: How to Lead a Team You Inherited And Thrive
What do you do when you inherit a mess you did not make? Most professionals do not build the team they lead. They inherit it. And somewhere in the first ninety days of a new role, a quiet question starts running underneath the work: how much of this is now mine to fix? Not your fault. Still your responsibility. That is the discipline this episode teaches, and it is more demanding than it first sounds. In this episode, host Ralph E. Owens II and co-host Terry Baylor close out a three-part conversation with Lawrence Scott, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, a former Army officer, and a John Maxwell Team certified coach who has spent over a decade developing athletes, executives, and leadership teams. Lawrence is also a fifth-generation inheritor of public leadership, which gives him a rare vantage point on what actually transfers between one leader and the next. He grew up surrounded by it. His great-grandfather built two church buildings on opposite corners in St. Louis and connected them with a skywalk, a structure people traveled to see. His grandfather appeared on television. His father carried it forward. And Lawrence can still name, precisely, what each generation observed but was never taught. That gap is the whole problem. Some capability is caught by exposure. Some has to be said out loud, with the reasoning attached, or it dies with the person who had it. What he found standing on those shoulders was that giants build on ground that does not always hold. Parts of what he inherited were solid. Parts were not. And the discipline he had to develop was checking which was which without tearing down the person who built it. You are not responsible for repairing what someone else broke. You are responsible for not repeating it, and for going further than it. WHO THIS EPISODE IS FOR Newly promoted leaders who inherited a team, a system, or a culture they did not design Managers who took over from a predecessor still working somewhere in the building Anyone planning their own succession and wondering what will actually transfer Professionals who were mentored by someone imperfect and are unsure how to honor that Leaders who suspect their shadowing and development programs are not transferring what they assume Anyone who has watched a good team keep routing decisions through a leader who no longer holds the role WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE Why inheriting a broken situation does not make you responsible for repairing it How the "I have to fix what they ruined" posture unintentionally dishonors the person before you The distinction between a turnaround and a succession, and why it changes everything about how you walk in Why successful succession is decided before the handoff, not during it The one question that predicts whether a leadership transition will work Why the military reassigns departing leaders out of the unit entirely, and what corporate leaves unsolved The difference between leadership that is taught and leadership that is caught The three Cs of building a high capacity team: competent, capacious, compelled Why convincing someone to join your team guarantees you will eventually lose them The single test that separates leading a person from using them Why honoring a legacy means outperforming it rather than preserving it ABOUT LAWRENCE SCOTT Lawrence Scott is a speaker, transformational coach, and founder of an executive leadership coaching practice. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and a former Army officer, he is certified through the John Maxwell Team and has spent over a decade helping athletes, executive teams, and world changers live and lead with purpose.
