Echt, ik werd er gek van.
Maarten, so yesterday I had a discussion with a friend of mine from England. Honestly, it drove me crazy.

Maarten: Oh ja? Waarover dan?
Oh really? About what then?

Lisa: Over het woord 'gezellig'. Ze bleef maar proberen het te vertalen. 'It's cozy, right?' Ik zei: nee, niet echt! Het is zo veel meer dan dat.
About the word 'gezellig'. She kept trying to translate it. 'It's cozy, right?' I said: no, not really! It's so much more than that.

Yes exactly, that's the classic. It's not something you can point to, it's the atmosphere. The situation you're in is 'gezellig'.

Lisa: Exact!
Exactly! The people, the conversation, the moment... oh wait, that reminds me of that dinner we talked about recently, remember? In that new little restaurant.

Maarten: Jazeker.
Absolutely. That was a good example of an evening where afterwards you say: 'that was really 'gezellig''.

Lisa: Precies! En wat dacht je van 'uitwaaien'? Dat is er ook zo een. Probeer dat maar eens uit te leggen.
Exactly! And what about 'uitwaaien'? That's another one. Just try to explain that.

Maarten: Haha, ja. 'Going out in the wind'.
Haha, yes. 'Going out in the wind'. It sounds like nothing. It's the feeling, the action of clearing your head by the sea. That's something you specifically drive to the coast for.

Lisa: Ja!
Yes! And that's sometimes necessary, with that work stress we talked about a few weeks ago. 'Uitwaaien' is the remedy I long for then.

Maarten: Dat is waar.
That's true. It's a good way to forget everything for a bit. Another one they don't really know abroad is 'borrelen'.

Lisa: Oh, 'borrelen' is heilig!
Oh, 'borrelen' is sacred! That's not just 'having a drink'. No, it's a complete social event. It's the activity where you catch up with friends or colleagues.

Well, with 'bitterballen' too, of course. The snacks are a make-or-break part of it.

Lekker direct.
Definitely. And then you have those direct expressions. Today's title: 'Houd je bek'. That's also so typically Dutch. Nicely direct.

Maarten: Het is nogal onbeleefd, hè.
It's quite rude, isn't it. It's not something you just say to anyone. It's a command you have to be careful with.

Lisa: Ach, soms is duidelijkheid gewoon fijn.
Ah, sometimes clarity is just nice. Remember that craft project I started? That was such a hassle. At one point I also thought: 'shut your mouth' to that instruction video and I stopped.

Dat liep even anders.
Haha, the project you thought would be so relaxing? That turned out differently.

Lisa: Ja, echt vervelend.
Yes, really annoying. But anyway, we're getting sidetracked. The Dutch language is just a treasure chest full of these kinds of strange, untranslatable things.

Actually, yes. The nuance is often the most important thing. The context in which you say something determines the whole meaning.

That English friend of mine also took everything so incredibly literally. I joked that it was raining pipe stems and she literally looked outside with wide eyes, searching for pipes.

Haha, yes, by the way, we often use that word 'literally' incorrectly ourselves. 'I literally died laughing'. That's nonsense, of course.

Lisa: Ja, precies.
Yes, exactly. That's really a bad habit of mine. Oh, and you just used the word destijds. That always sounds so formal.

Maarten: Valt mee toch? Het betekent gewoon 'in die tijd'. Destijds, toen we nog studeerden, hadden we hier eindeloze discussies over.
Not so bad, right? It just means 'at that time'. Back then, when we were still studying, we had endless discussions about this.

Sounds a lot more interesting than 'in the past', doesn't it?

Hi Maarten! Sorry, I was just finishing a podcast. I was completely engrossed in it.

Haha, no problem. I can tell, you were listening to something exciting again. What was it this time?

Oh, a true crime story. Seriously, I forget everything around me then. I always try to listen to the newest episode as soon as it comes out.

Over geschiedenis of wetenschap.
Yes, I get that. I'm less like that. I prefer listening to podcasts that explain something. About history or science.

Lisa: Oh wacht, dat is zo typisch jij. Gestructureerd en informatief. Ik wil gewoon vermaakt worden! Lekker meeleven met een verhaal.
Oh wait, that's so typical you. Structured and informative. I just want to be entertained! Really empathize with a story.

Well, to each their own. It reminds me a bit of how we used to watch TV. My parents always watched public broadcasting.

Lisa: Ja, precies! Elke avond. Dat was echt een fenomeen.
Yes, exactly! And then you had those shows that everyone watched. Remember, De Wereld Draait Door? Every evening. That was truly a phenomenon.

Maarten: Zeker.
Definitely. The viewership ratings were incredibly high. The presenter, Matthijs van Nieuwkerk, had an enormous influence on what became popular in the Netherlands.

Right? If a writer sat at that table, their book was sold out the next day. Bizarre, really. I did think it was a shame that it stopped.

That's true, although there was a lot of criticism later on about the work culture there. But it was a kind of national campfire. You have much less of that now.

No, now everyone chooses what they watch on a streaming service. I have a subscription to Netflix AND Videoland. Sometimes it's hard to choose.

Maarten: Precies.
Exactly. And you have shows like The Voice of Holland. Also something a lot of people watch, or well, used to watch.

Yes, that was also a thing. I really liked it at first, that concept of the 'blind auditions'. But after a few seasons, you know it. And there's always so much advertising in between.

Maarten: Die reclame is inderdaad vreselijk.
That advertising is indeed terrible. That's why a streaming service without ads is so nice. You can just watch an entire season in one weekend if you wanted to.

Haha, and that's what I do! I recently watched an entire series in two days. Then I just forget to eat or sleep. Not very healthy, I think.

Maarten: Dat lijkt me niet, nee.
I don't think so, no. I try to dose it a bit. One episode per evening, two at most. Otherwise, I won't get out of bed in the morning.

Lisa: Verstandig.
Sensible. Anyway, speaking of podcasts, I recently read a very good review about a new historical podcast. Maybe something for you?

Heel interessant.
Oh, send it over. I'm always looking for something new. I'm currently mainly listening to a news program in podcast form. Very interesting.

Lisa: Wacht, een wat? Een actu... actualiteitenrubriek? Wat een woord. Dat klinkt ontzettend serieus.
Wait, a what? A news... news program? What a word. That sounds incredibly serious.

Heel handig.
Haha, yes, that's a program about the news of the day. The TV broadcast is then put online as a podcast. Very handy.

Ah, that way. I also find 'the listener' such a formal word. I don't feel like a listener, I'm just... listening.

Maarten: Ja precies.
Yes, exactly. And 'viewership rating' is also something like that. A number that says how many people are watching. It sound...

Zeg, wat loop je stijf.
Hi Lisa. Say, you're walking stiffly.

Ah, don't ask. I can barely go down the stairs anymore. I went to the gym yesterday and now I have muscle soreness everywhere.

Haha, that sounds familiar. Then I guess we immediately have a topic for today.

Lisa: Ja, echt.
Yeah, really. A few months ago, I signed up full of good intentions, because I thought: 'this year I'm really going to get fit'.

Maarten: En dus meteen een abonnement afgesloten?
And so you immediately signed up for a membership?

Yes, a year-long membership even. I thought, then I'll have to go. But now, oh... I'm already considering cancelling it. I just don't go often enough, which makes it quite expensive, actually.

Yeah, that's the risk. I had that for a while too. I'd be on the treadmill for half an hour, looking outside where people were just running for free. That felt a bit odd.

Lisa: Precies!
Exactly! And the atmosphere in the gym... everyone is so serious. Especially in that corner where they're lifting weights. I always feel a bit watched.

I recognize that, although I think it's mostly in your own head. Most people are just busy with themselves.

Oh wait, I did have something funny recently. There was a man groaning so loudly while lifting weights that the whole room was secretly laughing. That certainly broke the serious atmosphere for a moment.

Haha, yeah, you have those types too. Those who really show off. I try to ignore those kinds of distractions by just putting on music and focusing on my own routine.

Zonder enige instructie natuurlijk.
See, you're much more disciplined. I get distracted far too easily. Then I see someone doing something and I think: oh, that looks interesting, let me try that too. Without any instruction, of course.

That's the fastest way to an injury, Lisa.

Yeah, or to extreme muscle soreness. But anyway, maybe a team sport is more for me then. Something with more camaraderie.

Maarten: Zoals voetbal? Al is dat misschien ook best serieus.
Like football? Although that might also be quite serious.

Yes, but then at least you have the social aspect after training. That's different from standing alone in the changing room and quickly going home again.

Maarten: Dat is waar.
That's true. And football is such a big thing in the Netherlands. Especially when Oranje plays, the whole country suddenly becomes an expert.

Right?! You see that with ice skating too. As soon as it freezes a bit, everyone wants to get on the ice, even if they haven't skated in ten years.

Well, isn't that charming in its own way? That there's a kind of national hobby that only appears when the weather allows it. That's uniquely Dutch, isn't it?

Lisa: Eigenlijk wel. Net als die gekke sporten op Koningsdag. Zaklopen! En koekhappen!
Actually, yes. Just like those crazy sports on King's Day. Sack race! And cookie biting!

Maarten: Precies.
Exactly. It's silly, but everyone participates enthusiastically because the atmosphere is so good. The competition isn't that serious, it's more about the fun.

Maybe I should convert my gym membership into a sack race membership.

I think you'd be the only one, but it's worth a try.

You just said 'zich uitsloven'. That's a typical word for it, is...
