[…] We notice the evidence that supports our assumptions. We become more confident. And once the room starts moving towards yes, questioning the plan can become surprisingly difficult. There's a whole collection of psychological tendencies behind this. Optimism bias, overconfidence, confirmation bias, groupthink. But you don't need to know the specifics of any of those terms to recognize the behavior. Think about the last big project you were a part of. At some point, somebody probably asked, what do we think? And once the group started moving towards a decision, the conversation changed. Instead of asking whether the decision was right, everyone starts figuring out how to make the decision work. […]
