07 | Teacher Appreciation Week with Christine Kennelly

We close out our Teacher Appreciation Week series with a very heartfelt conversation with Christine Kennelly, a high school math teacher in her 13th year of the craft, who teaches at a public charter school in the Denver metro area. There were so many moments throughout our conversation that I got chills, and I couldn’t help but think - I hope my children have a teacher like you some day.

We talk about the constant state of reflection Christine is in, the cycles of purposeful adjustment that characterize her teaching practices, why having deep relationships with students and their families benefits her as a teacher but also the community as a whole, how we know that anybody can be a math person, and the benefits of nontraditional paths into the classroom.

She shared why she has literally never been bored teaching, what it’s like to work with educators who are all willing to do whatever it takes to support a young person, and why she loves it when students ask “Miss, when am I really going to need to know this?”

I was especially compelled by her perspective of assessments like the PSAT and SAT, and the role they play in not only her teaching practice but society at large, as the key determinant of whether or not so many young people gain acceptance to great universities, are awarded scholarships, or receive the financial aid packages and summer internships they deserve.

You can follow Christine on LinkedIn, or email her at Christine.Kennelly@scienceandtech.org if you'd like to stay in touch.

If you enjoyed today’s episode of Learning Talks, please follow, rate, and review us wherever you are listening to the show. 06 | Teacher Appreciation Week with Sarah Nichols

Today we continue the Teacher Appreciation Week Series with Sarah Nichols, an upper school Maths teacher at a PreK-12 independent school just outside of Detroit, Michigan, in her 19th year of teaching. Sarah also happens to have a phenomenal TikTok channel that’s one of my very favorite parts of the MathTok world.

Sarah and I talk everything from the dualities in teaching like blending planning and improvisation, to decision fatigue, to the impact of cultural shifts on teacher partnerships with families over the last 20 years, to veteran teachers to are still out here trying new things every day!

This was a deeply joyful conversation for me, and I think you'll enjoy it, too!

You can follow Sarah's work on her awesome TikTok channel, the MathedUpShow.

And, check out the Building Thinking Classrooms website to learn more about those learning resources mentioned by Sarah during the episode.

If you enjoyed today’s episode of Learning Talks, please follow, rate, and review us wherever you are listening to the show. 05 | Teacher Appreciation Week with Traci Jones

In this Learning Talk, we continue our special Teacher Appreciation Week series with teacher Traci Jones!

Traci is a 9th year Kindergarten teacher from Manassas, Virginia with a passion for instructional technology in the classroom! I found Traci to share a very tender approach to her practice, and I loved her take on the "truth of teaching" - regularly asking yourself, no matter who the student is in front of you and what their background is, "What is it going to take for them to be receptive to learning from me today?" And, she has a fabulous idea for a new teacher version of Jury Duty that I think any of our public policy makers out there listening should take special note of!

You can follow Traci and her work on LinkedIn.

If you enjoyed today’s episode of Learning Talks, please follow, rate, and review us wherever you are listening to the show.
