Í ágúst árið 1966 fundust lík tveggja rafmagnsverkfræðinga í rjóðri efst á hæð nokkurri í grennd við Ríó de Janeiro í Brasilíu. Mennirnir voru báðir klæddir í snyrtileg jakkaföt og regnkápur utan yfir, með undarlegur grímur úr blýi fyrir andlitunun. Engin leið var að segja til um hvers vegna mennirnir hefðu látið lífið - á þeim voru engir áverkar og engin merki um eitrun af neinu tagi, en í jakkavasa annars þeirra fannst miði með dularfullum fyrirmælum.

Sumarnótt eina braust einhver inn á heimili Moore-fjölskyldunnar í bænum Villisca, og myrti allt heimilisfólkið með exi á hrottalegan hátt. Í gegnum tíðina hafa margir verið grunaðir um glæpinn, allt frá keppinautum fjölskylduföðursins í viðskiptum til grunsamlegra farandpredikara. En nýjustu rannsóknir benda til þess að sannleikurinn í málinu gæti verið langtum verri.
