[…] The column spent a miserable winter at Camp Scott, near the ruins of Fort Bridger. In the spring of 1858, Colonel Johnston marched his troops through Echo Canyon, the narrow passage the Mormons had prepared to defend, and found it unguarded. The Mormons stood down, and Brigham Young accepted the new governor. The so-called Utah War, also known as the Mormon War, ended without a battle between the U.S. Army and the Mormon militias, though the people of the Baker-Fancher wagon train weren't so fortunate. In September of 1857, while Jim Bridger and the U.S. Army were riding across southern Wyoming, the Baker-Fancher wagon train bound for California was in the far southwest corner of Utah. […]
