LEROY POWELL | Let's Chat Creative Pathways with Beth Bailey | EP37

From No Responses to His Own Gallery: Leroy Powell on Turning a Salon Wall Into Ivy Lane Gallery This episode of Let's Chat Creative Pathways is recorded inside Ivy Lane Gallery, (https://www.instagram.com/ivylanegallery/) the plant filled gallery space Leroy Powell built into Powell & Burke Salon (https://www.instagram.com/powellandburke/), the Newbury Street hair salon he co-owns with his husband, Jason Burke. After sending roughly 20 outreach emails to galleries and getting zero responses, Leroy stopped waiting for permission. He turned his own brick and mortar into the gallery he couldn't get into, then held the door open wide, curating group shows that bring in other artists too. We talk about: Why "no" would've been easier to hear than silence, and what he did instead. His portrait process: tracing, graphite transfer, then loosening up with color and collage. Building a 12-piece astrological portrait series (a color wheel when hung together). Starting an annual holiday painting turned into greeting cards. Growing up between Ivy Lane Farm in England and Connecticut, art school at Montserrat College of Art (https://www.montserrat.edu/), and how illustration and campus life led him into hairstyling. His standing instruction to commission clients: "give me as little or as much as you want, I'll fill in the rest," and what taught him to hold a firm line around what's his to add. Find Leroy's work, prints, and commission info at goleroy.com. It's a fun site to poke around, he designed it himself. JENNY KELLY | Let's Chat Creative Pathways with Beth Bailey | EP36

What does it take to turn a childhood love of color into a thriving career in fine art? In this episode, we sit down with South Shore painter Jenny Kelly to trace her creative journey—from matching fabric swatches for iconic Cape Cod interior designer Joan Peters at age 15, to navigating the intense studio culture at RISD, teaching high school art, and eventually finding her voice as a painter of luminous, hyper-detailed floral still lifes. Jenny opens up about the reality of balancing high-level studio work with early motherhood, why she took a year-and-a-half break from painting (and how it actually improved her work), and the exact technical process behind her jewel-toned florals on aluminum-backed linen panels. We also discuss finding strength in the local women-led artist community, trusting creative momentum, and why you never need to wait for life to slow down to make your art. In this episode, we discuss: The Joan Peters Influence: Hand-painting furniture and mixing acrylics to match custom fabrics on Cape Cod at age 15. The RISD Experience: Surviving brutal critiques, the introvert-extrovert dynamic in art school, and finding your own lane outside abstract trends. Teaching & Autonomy: Learning digital media on the fly and building eight years of hands-on art retreats at St. John Paul II. Motherhood & Studio Shifts: Stepping away from the easel, falling in love with knitting, and returning to painting with fresh eyes and less overthinking. Technical Breakdown: Working single-layer wet-on-wet with transparent pigments, mixing stand oil, ditching turpentine, and why Jenny paints on Artefex aluminum linen panels. Community Over Competition: Showing with Arden Gallery on Newbury Street, curating local exhibitions at the James Library, and reading Rick Rubin. Beth Bailey | Let's Chat Creative Pathways | EP35| Levitate, Chautauqua, and the Hard Truth Behind My Work

Beth is back from two months off and two weeks at Chautauqua Institution's visual arts residency, and she's got a lot to catch up on. In this solo episode: painting a mural for Levitate Festival, 2 lesson plans at their Creative Kids Camp, landing new funding from the Jack Tarver Family Foundation for afterschool arts programming at Downey Elementary, and what two weeks at an artist residency actually looks like day to day. She also opens up about postpartum anxiety and depression, the ongoing Lindsay Clancy trial in her South Shore, MA community, and why she's building a public conversation, including an upcoming panel discussion, around maternal mental health. It's a lot: joyful, funny, and genuinely hard in places, take care listening. Get on the newsletter at creative-pathways.com/newsletter for links to every artist and gallerist Beth met at Chautauqua.
