Let’s Get The Banned Back Together

About Let’s Get The Banned Back Together

Why did 72 of the goriest, most gruesome and grotesque horror movies suddenly…disappear? How did cult thrillers, shockers, slashers and horrors go from “available now!” to renters and owners winding up in UK prisons? And what happened in the early 80s that got priests, parents and politicians on the march to “Ban This Filth!” But more importantly…where can I get these movies?! A hilarious deep dive into the forgotten world of banned VHS horror movies from the 60s, 70s and 80s that fell foul of the British censors during the ”Video Nasty” moral panic. Comedian, novelist and pub-quiz host Richard Asplin takes you through spoilerific plot details, kill by kill, looking at the often comedic carnage that lurks between the credits in some of the most infamous banned horrors of the era. Novelist, broadcaster and comedian Richard Asplin has appeared on Radio 5 Live & LBC, guested on ’Smershpod’ as well as writing for The Guardian and The Sunday Telegraph.

Let's Get The Banned Back Together - 11 BAY OF BLOOD 1971

“Entertaining, sometimes brilliantly funny…” Chortle.co.uk Doing for the Italian town of Latzio what Michael Myers did for Haddonfield, what Leatherface did for Texas and what David Brent did for Slough…we arrive - at last - to dive deep into the murky waters of Giallo (remembering to hold our nose, clutch tight our baggy Speedos and avoid the bobbing corpses…) Ciao ragazze! A splashy sinister world of mystery, inheritance, seduction, moustaches and dune-buggies! All the synths, all the sleaze, all the mascara, all the murder, all the black gloves and all the dark deeds of the stickiest and sexiest of genres, its time to discover the most influential work by the Master Of Macabre, Mario Bava! Who are the selection of misfits, oddballs and badly dubbed hammy twerps who inhabit the luxury Italian Bay? And why can't they seemingly stay alive for more than twelve minutes before getting a machete in the gums? Why does everyone seem to have a rightful claim to the dead Countess's land? And why do those who are meant to be under twenty all look about forty-six? Where did the trio of writers get the inspiration that created this efficient, strip-em-down and slash 'em up blueprint which would go on, from here, to inspire 20 years of Friday the 13th style horror knock-offs? And how did director Bava get the cast to keep a straight face when he had to fake the lushness of the location by waggling leaves in front of the lens while pulling the camera along on a child's wagon? (Note, he didn't). Discover all this and much, much more, as we count down all fourteen juicy slayings, discover the origins of the Giallo genre, dig through the meatballs into the work of budget producer Dino De Laurentiis and try and keep track as the movie (rated V for Violence) is released, withdrawn, banned, cut, renamed and rereleased…only to eventually appear on Total Film's list of  Greatest Horrors Of All Time. All this while labouring under over twelve different preposterous titles at the box office… it's Mario Bava's carnival of carnage, "Twitch Of the Death Nerve," aka…BAY OF BLOOD! Richard Asplin is an award nominated novelist, comedian, pub quiz host and has appeared on Smershpod, LBC and Radio 5 as well as writing for The Guardian and The Sunday Telegraph. #videonasty #horror #horrormovies #bayofblood #vhs #mariobava #banned #bbfc #dpp #giallo

    Let's Get the Banned Back Together - 5 LOVE CAMP 7 1969

Well it couldn’t stay fun for long. On the flip side of the silly splattery slapstick, the movie monsters, fake blood and prosthetics…this. The first true 'exploitation' in our 'exploration'. A nasty little exercise in soft core women-in-prison unpleasantness, the movie that launched the thankfully short-lived nazisploitation trend, from the director of Mondo Bizarro, Love Is A 4 Letter Word and Hollywood’s World Of Flesh. This early effort virtually created this unpleasant Women In Prison genre of exploitation picture, whihc brought us 1971s Women in Cages and 72s The Big Bird Cage both giving the world an early glimpse of the legendary Pam “Foxy Brown” Grier. WHO are the two brave women sent to enemy territory to be picked up and imprisoned? WHAT is the weapons-grade secret they have been sent to retrieve from poor Martha Grossman? HAS this entire piece of nonsense really been shot on one cardboard set over a weekend? HOW MANY times can they claim this is a true story shot on location when it clearly is snuffy titillating drivel knocked up by a bored theatre group? HONESTLY - the German Shepherd is the only watchable thing in it. And he still looks like a wrong ‘un. God bless the BBFC who got rid of this forever. A year after one Romero set the horror bar high with Night Of The Living Dead, his namesake lowers it a good foot and a half with this Philippines jungle shocker! WHY did a young boy bleed green blood and turn insane and drown himself…only to turn up 5 years later? WHY do the dates on Dom Ramon's coffin not tally with the dates on the letters he sent his son? And can you REALLY base a whole movie on a monster clearly created with Sellotape and lettuce? Comedian, novelist and pub quiz host Richard Asplin takes you kill by kill through a spoilerific romp through the gravestones, ghouls and gore in episode 4 of this exploration into all the horror movies your government, your teachers and your parents NEVER wanted you to see!
