In a previous episide (#67), we discussed flattening the hierarchy in combat sports. One point of discussion was the idea of moving away from the traditional top-down head coach structure. Instead, we argued for multiple coaches (each with real and meaningful influence) as a way of preventing abuses of power.
On this episode we ask: in these multi coach gyms - how do you ensure that folks do not get lost in the shuffle? How can coaches actively work to not just see students, but also ensure they feel seen?

68. Being a Good Training Partner
In this episode, we explore what it truly means to be a good training partner in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—and why that responsibility is just as important as personal progress. While each of us comes to the mat with individual goals, improvement in BJJ is inherently collaborative. Every roll, drill, and exchange is shaped by the people we train with.
Rather than framing training as something we take from our partners, this conversation centers on how we can make it mutually beneficial. We discuss pacing, communication, ego management, and the ability to adapt to different bodies, skill levels, and intentions. Being a good partner isn't about going easy or going hard—it's about awareness, respect, and creating conditions where both people can learn and stay safe.
Ultimately, this episode is about shifting perspective: from seeing training as a series of individual performances to understanding it as a shared process. Because better training partners don't just improve individual outcomes—they strengthen the entire room.
