Bargaining with Patriarchy - The Gender Deals We Make Every Day
Gender is something we do...all of us. We perform our gender in many ways and sometimes we make bargains with the system at play. This is called Patriarchal Bargaining. In my gender sociology studies at Arizona State University, I was given the opportunity to create something informative based on our course learnings. I chose something that gave name to something many of us experience. I chose to let others help me tell the story. I hope you learn something new and that you let that new learning shift how you see our society and our gender experiences. It's up to each of us to stay curious and keep educating ourselves.

Submission Is A Dirty Word
Submission was the teaching/mandate/calling we got in Purity Culture AFTER the alter. I'm not holding back on this one because my experience in the evangelical church was truly vile. AND...even if yours wasn't, you may have held some level of this oppressive belief.
I absolutely hate what this belief has done to both women and men. And I was responsible for perpetuating its hurtful agenda.

The Pure Truth of Purity Culture
I was a teen in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. I was a committed member of Purity Culture. I could have been a poster child for the movement if there had been one other than Joshua Harris. Purity Culture suited me in more ways than I understood back then. It was safe and actionable. It had outcomes and it felt really good to be good.
Here’s the thing though. I have spent over 27 years recovering and healing from it. It wrecked me. And not in a holy and good kind of way. It stole from me. It stole my femininity, my sexuality, my wholeness. It created in me a human on a mission to destroy and bury a part of who I was.

Free Your Identity
Who are you allowed to be? We have influences throughout our lives that embed, or hardwire, ideologies into our social and coping skills. We learn who we are allowed to be without engaging in the experience of rejection. We learn morally through faith systems (culture and beliefs) what is acceptable to remain “in” or “holy”. These are powerful forces in our minds, aren’t they?
But what if you could untangle yourself from the presupposed hardwiring and have the confidence to be you without care of the repercussion?

Who Am I?
If all of my value, my worth, and my identity were in someone else, then there was no value in being me. It was a devastating realization. It was a realization that put me on the floor like a thud. I didn’t get there overnight, but at the moment when I allowed the internal conflict to speak up, then that moment was a thud heard throughout my entire being. How are our identities formed, do we have a choice in who we are and how do we let go of an identity I no longer connect with? What could a liberated identity feel like?

Small Stories
I lived a small story for far too long. A story full of expectations of how I was to conduct myself, how I was to look, how I was to speak, and even what I could desire. I say this is a small story because stories written by others for us to live out are always small. There is no power in the universe comparable to a story that has been liberated from narratives that are meant to define us, define our roles...narratives meant to keep us in our place.
