   After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, more and more anarchists and anti-fascists have ended up in prison for resisting the war and the regime in Russia. Who are the anarchists and anti-fascists imprisoned for anti-war and other political activities? What initiatives exist to support them, and what can ordinary people do? Are social movements in Russia still possible despite increasing repression? Antti Rautiainen lived in Moscow from 1999 to 2012 and participated in anti-fascist and anarchist movements until he was deported.    The currently popular story of the Ukraine among the mainstream Ukrainian liberal nationalists is that Ukraine is the original Kievan Rus civilized empire, whereas Russia is a cheap copy of it. This story has some consistency issues, but who would like to be the empire anyway, if you may be a freebooter Cossack, roaming freely in wild steppe?    Anti-war resistance in Russia and anarchists

   Thousands of Russians have been fighting against the invasion to Ukraine. During first month of protests against the war, 15 000 people were detained. Small street actions are still sporadically taking place, although they are heavily persecuted. More than 300 people have been imprisoned for anti-war activities, including six anarchists and antifascists. What are the current anti-war initiatives in Russia tofollow? How to support Russian anti-war movement, which is operating in more and more repressive circumstances? Why Russian anti-war movement has this far failed to change the course of war? Who are the current anarchist and anti-fascists prisoners in Russia, and how to support them? A presentation for the Bristol Anarchist Bookfair, 1 November 2025, by Antti Rautiainen. The presentation was also delivered at the London Anarchist Bookfair on 20 Septemberand at the Cowley Club in Bristol on 21 September 2025. Compared to the June presentation, the case of Kirill Bobrov has beenadded. Kirill Bobrov was suspected of involvement in the insurrectionary anarchist organisation RevolutionaryAssociation of Free People in 2011–2012. The group claimed responsibility for arson attacks against government buildings and the ruling party in Ufa. Kirill managed to escape and was granted asylum in Austria, but later returned to Russia while suffering from serious mental health problems. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2024; however, the anarchist movement only became aware of his case in 2025.    Struggles Against the Right-Wing Government in Finland

   In spring of 2023, after center-left government of Sanna Marin was defeated in Finnish elections, leader of neoliberal National Coalition party invited right-wing populist Perussuomalaiset (Finns, literal translation Basic Finns) -party to form the most right-wing government in Finland since 1920’s. Since then, multiple protest movements have arisen in Finland, against austerity, anti-immigrant and anti-labor measures of the government, and revealed racist messages and cooperation of right-wing populist with Nazis. Labour unions declared wave of strikes, including halting of most Finnish foreign trade for 1 month in spring of 2024. However, this far protest movements have gained only minor victories. How history of the right-wing populism in Finland explains its relatively easy access to positions of power?    A veteran of the anarchist and anti-fascist movement of Ukraine, Maxim Butkevich, has been a prisoner of war of the Russian army for two years. There are several ways to be an anarchist. An anarchist can, for example, be an underground fighter and go into direct conflict with the authorities in every area. But an anarchist can also seek maximum opportunities to influence society through public means, but without trying to take power.    Dmitry Petrov – The Path of an Anarchist

   On April 19, Dmitry Petrov, a Russian anarchist fighting on the side of Ukraine, died in battle near Bakhmut. For almost twenty years, Dima contributed immensely to the anarchist movement in Russia and Ukraine. Dima was, first and foremost, a person of action, not a theoretician. Although, a rather interesting synthesis of ideas was also observable in his practice that deserves broad discussion within the anarchist movement and will now need to be further developed without him. I began to write this text immediately after Dima’s death was confirmed, but the text dragged on, and in the meantime, a lot had already been said. Therefore, I will concentrate on those aspects of Dima’s activities that have been written about less so far, namely his student activism and other (semi-)open projects in Moscow in the 2000s, his religious views, and the first stages of his underground activities.     Anarchists should not be spreading Putinist propaganda

    Why supporting Russian anti-war prisoners is also struggle against the war?

    There is a fundraising campaign going on for antiwar prisoners in Russia, and until midnight of tomorrow 3000 euros should be raised, and quite a big amount is still missing: https://www.firefund.net/antiwarprisoners2022 To me it seems that it is not obvious for everyone, how supporting this prisoners is part of the general anti-war effort, and actually a crucial part in bringing down the Russian regime. Supporting prisoners involved in a direct action against war and Russian regime is not just a humanitarian effort, although due to current circumstances in Russia, support has to be framed as humanitarian, ”non-political” effort. The point is not only to help these people facing draconian charges (often from 15 years in prison to a life sentence), but also to legitimize direct actions in general. Russian state and mainstream media says these people are terrorists. Prisoner support counters this claim. Prisoner support shows, that direct action against war is the most normal reaction in the current circumstances. Many of the arrested, who are suspected of direct actions, have been acting alone, in isolation, often without proper security culture. This is unfortunate, but by creating an international movement of support, we may replace this current isolation with solidarity. This way the next wave of direct actions may be more collective and more planned.     Anarchist discussion on the war in Ukraine

After Russian invasion of 24th of February, Ukrainian anarchists have mobilised to resist the invasion, and most of the anarchists in Russia have either fleed from the country or joined the anti-war movement, which has yet failed to make a significant impact to stop the war.     Solidarity with anti-war movement in Russia Presentation in Stockholm anarchist bookfair 5th of June 2022. Thousands of Russians have been resisting against the invasion to Ukraine. During first month of protests, 15 000 people were detained. Actions still continue, but in a smaller scale. At least 28 people are in prison, suspected of direct actions or just speaking out against the war. Military call-up centers have been torched, and railways sabotaged in at least 10 regions of Russia. What are the current anti-war initiatives in Russia to follow?     Anarchism has many meanings - it means chaos, quirky individuality and a school of political thought and a social movement, born in 19th century. As a movement, anarchism has both over- and underperformed during its history. Overperformed, because no-one questions importance of individuality. Underpeformed, because promised future without state and capital has failed to materialize. Its classical thinkers are simultaneously completely out of date, and clairvoyants of the present reality and struggles. As Max Stirner wrote, people of the future will yet fight their way to many a liberty that we do not even miss. What is anarchism as a social movement, and its relevance in the 21th century?     In Russia, just fitting the "terrorist" profile will put you in prison

    In April 2017, a bombing took place in the Saint Petersburg metro. The explosion killed 16 people and injured 103. Russian security services arrested 11 suspects. They were sentenced last December. All of them denied the charges. The Memorial human rights organization sees the trial as questionable.
