The Books You Weren’t Looking For: Browsing Hispanic Heritage Month at the Library
What happens when you stop searching for the book you already know you want—and start browsing for the one you didn’t know you needed?
In this episode of Library-ish, Traci and January celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month and Hispanic Heritage Month by exploring one of the best things about visiting the library: discovery!
We’re talking about how browsing the shelves can lead you beyond your usual reading habits and introduce you to new authors, genres, cultures, and perspectives. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’ll also share some fun “If you like this author, try this one” pairings to help you use familiar favorites as a starting point for discovering Hispanic and Latino writers.
Plus, we’re issuing a Browse Beyond Challenge: grab your library card, spend a little time wandering the shelves, and check out one book you never planned to read.
Because your library can help you find the book you came in for—but sometimes the real magic is discovering the book you never knew you were looking for.

The Books Everyone Pretends They’ve Read.
📚 **Be honest…have you actually read it?**We all know the books we’re *supposed* to have read: *Moby-Dick*, *War and Peace*, *Pride and Prejudice*, *1984*—the classics that loom large on bookshelves, school reading lists, and in our collective imagination. But how many of them have we actually finished?
In this episode of **Library-ish**, Traci and January confess some of their own literary blind spots and explore **“The Books Everyone Pretends They’ve Read.”**
We’re talking about:📖 Why certain books became “required reading” in the first place.
🎬 Famous stories we know better from movies and pop culture than from the original books.
🔖 The classics we start…and start…and never quite finish🐋 Whether famously intimidating books like *Moby-Dick* and *War and Peace* are actually worth tackling.
🚫 Why there’s absolutely nothing wrong with not finishing a book.
📚 And why being a reader doesn’t mean checking titles off somebody else’s literary bucket list.
Plus, we ask the question that could get us all in trouble:**What’s the most famous book you’ve never read?**Confess yours in the comments—we promise this is a judgment-free zone!*Library-ish* is a Butte County Library podcast celebrating books, libraries, reading, and all the wonderfully library-ish things in between.👍 Like the episode, subscribe, and join us for more Library-ish!
