Spore Sized: The Giant Spring Polypore That Smells Like Watermelon

Polyporus squamosus, known as Dryad’s Saddle or Pheasant’s Back and often placed in Cerioporus, is one of the most distinctive large polypores of spring. Its broad, scaly cap can produce a surprising watermelon or cucumber-like scent, while its biology spans both living and dead hardwood. Dive deeper on the blog: https://lichenthevibe.com/cerioporus-squamosus-dryads-saddle/ (https://lichenthevibe.com/cerioporus-squamosus-dryads-saddle/) In this episode, two hosts examine its fan-shaped yellow-brown caps, dark scales, thick stem, broad angular pores and soft flesh when young. They explore its unusual ecological transition from parasite on living hardwoods such as elm, maple, ash and beech to a white-rot saprobe that continues decomposing the dead wood. The conversation then moves into chemistry and molecular biology, focusing on PSL, a highly specific lectin that recognizes 6′-sialylated structures on N-glycans and has applications in glycobiology. Research has also identified trehalose, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, β-tocopherol and polyunsaturated fatty acids, while laboratory studies have reported antioxidant, antibacterial, antibiofilm and antiquorum-sensing activity. The hosts carefully distinguish laboratory findings from proven health effects, field observations and the long tradition of harvesting young Dryad’s Saddle as a spring edible. The episode also considers its relationships with fungus beetles and its important role in forest decomposition. From its distinctive fragrance to its specialized lectin, Polyporus squamosus demonstrates how a familiar woodland mushroom can connect forest ecology, gastronomy and molecular research. Dryad’s Saddle: The Watermelon-Scented Polypore With a Remarkable Double Life

One of spring’s most recognizable large polypores can smell surprisingly like watermelon or cucumber. Polyporus squamosus, commonly called Dryad’s Saddle or Pheasant’s Back and often placed in Cerioporus, can begin life as a parasite of living hardwoods before continuing as a powerful white-rot decomposer after the host wood dies. Dive deeper on the blog: https://lichenthevibe.com/cerioporus-squamosus-dryads-saddle/ (https://lichenthevibe.com/cerioporus-squamosus-dryads-saddle/) In this episode, two hosts examine its large fan- or saddle-shaped yellow-brown caps, dark scales, short thick stem with its often-blackish base, and broad angular cream-colored pores. Young fruitbodies have soft flesh and have a long history as a spring edible, while older specimens rapidly become tough. Ecologically, the species is associated with hardwoods including elm, maple, ash and beech. It can fruit repeatedly from the same host and frequently appears in spring alongside morels. Its white-rot activity helps break down woody material and return nutrients to the forest ecosystem. The discussion then moves from forest ecology into molecular research. A particularly unusual feature is polyporin squamosus lectin, or PSL, whose remarkable specificity for Neu5Acα2,6Galβ1,4Glc/GlcNAc structures on N-glycans has made it valuable in glycobiological research. Chemical studies have also identified trehalose as a dominant free sugar, p-hydroxybenzoic acid among its notable phenolics, β-tocopherol, and a favorable polyunsaturated fatty-acid profile. Laboratory research has further reported antioxidant, antibacterial, antibiofilm and antiquorum-sensing activity, including effects involving Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These findings are laboratory observations, however, and should not be confused with established medical applications. The episode separates peer-reviewed chemistry and bioactivity research from field ecology and culinary tradition, providing a grounded look at a species that connects forest decomposition, food culture and glycobiology. Spore Sized: Why This Tiny Polypore Has a Fringed Edge

Most people would overlook Polyporus ciliatus, but its delicately hairy cap margin and fine pores make it one of the more distinctive small polypores of temperate forests. Dive deeper on the blog: https://lichenthevibe.com/fringed-polypore-polyporus-ciliatus/ (https://lichenthevibe.com/fringed-polypore-polyporus-ciliatus/) In this episode, two hosts explore the Fringed Polypore’s morphology, including its small brown to yellowish-brown cap, ciliate margin, pores typically measuring 5–7 per millimeter, slender stem, and tough fruitbodies. The discussion then examines its role as a saprobic white-rot fungus, primarily decomposing fallen hardwood such as beech, oak, and alder. The episode also covers its temperate distribution, mainly late-spring and summer fruiting, recent Japanese records, and cultural studies documenting chlamydospore production. Comparisons with the Winter Polypore and related Polyporus species highlight why seemingly subtle morphological differences matter. Finally, the hosts consider what remains unknown. While its morphology and ecology are increasingly well characterized, dedicated chemical and enzymatic research on P. ciliatus remains limited, leaving its secondary-metabolite biology largely unexplored. A quiet but distinctive fungus, Polyporus ciliatus demonstrates how tiny hairs, fine pores, and careful observation can reveal far more than its modest appearance suggests.
