Tess of the d'Urbervilles follows Tess Durbeyfield, a young woman whose life is shaped by poverty, sexual violence, social judgment, and a series of cruel circumstances. After being harmed by Alec d'Urberville, Tess is treated by society as though she is morally guilty, even though she is the victim.
Later, she finds hope with Angel Clare, but their marriage collapses when Angel discovers her past and judges her by a harsher standard than he applies to himself. Tess is then pushed back into hardship, and Alec once again gains power over her through her family's vulnerability.
Thomas Hardy uses Tess's tragedy to criticize Victorian ideas about purity, gender, class, and morality. The novel shows how fate may be harsh, but social hypocrisy, poverty, and unequal standards often make suffering even worse.
Tess of the d'Urbervilles remains powerful because it asks readers to look beyond labels and judgments. Tess is not defined by what was done to her, but by her humanity, resilience, and capacity for love in a world that repeatedly fails to treat her with justice.

Middlemarch – George Eliot
Middlemarch follows a network of characters living in a provincial English town, with particular focus on Dorothea Brooke, an idealistic young woman seeking a meaningful life, and Tertius Lydgate, an ambitious doctor hoping to reform medical practice. Both enter marriages shaped by expectation and discover how easily private dreams can collide with reality.
Through Dorothea's disappointing marriage to Casaubon, Lydgate's troubled relationship with Rosamond, and Fred Vincy's slower path toward maturity with Mary Garth, George Eliot explores marriage, ambition, class, money, social pressure, and self-deception. The novel shows how people often fall in love not only with others, but with imagined versions of the lives they hope to have.
At the same time, Middlemarch presents society as a web in which every decision affects someone else. Careers, reputations, relationships, and opportunities are shaped by forces far beyond individual control. Yet Eliot also insists that kindness, humility, and moral growth can matter even when they remain unnoticed.
Middlemarch endures because it transforms ordinary provincial life into a profound study of human connection. Its deepest message is that a meaningful life does not require public greatness; often, the most important influence comes through quiet acts of understanding and generosity.

Great Expectations – Charles Dickens
Great Expectations follows Pip, an orphan raised by his sister and the kind blacksmith Joe Gargery. After a frightening encounter with the escaped convict Magwitch and later visits to the strange home of Miss Havisham, Pip becomes ashamed of his humble background and begins dreaming of becoming a gentleman worthy of the beautiful but emotionally distant Estella.
When an anonymous benefactor gives him the chance to move to London and enter a higher social world, Pip assumes Miss Havisham is preparing him for Estella. The truth is very different: his fortune comes from Magwitch, the convict he once helped as a child. This revelation forces Pip to confront his own class prejudice, ingratitude, and mistaken ideas about success.
As his expectations collapse, Pip gradually learns that wealth, refinement, and social position do not determine a person's worth. Joe's loyalty, Magwitch's gratitude, and Pip's own painful mistakes teach him that character matters more than status.
Great Expectations remains one of Dickens's most enduring novels because it explores ambition, class, guilt, love, and moral growth with both emotional depth and sharp social criticism.
