Join host, V.J. Hyde and special guests for a garden party podcast where we talk dirt and play music for the plants. Recorded live from a community garden plot in the DMV. Come for the gardening tips and stay for the live music!
Each episode, V.J. and guest(s) meet in his community garden plot to chat about gardening, music, sustainability, culture and more. No garden party is complete without music, so listeners (and V.J. 's plants) will be treated to live music from locally, nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians. Think of it as NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts but live from a garden plot with tips on how to deal with a fungus gnat infestation in your spider plants.
We actually get to hear the garden (specifically the horseradish plant) come to life thanks to Laura Feibelman and a little assist from the Plant Wave (https://plantwave.com/products/plantwave?srsltid=AU7gw4X8aOLVD8QgqhshpkTJxVwuUxmHibV8K8aA7laNkYhEVOtgYvCx) on episode 23 of Live from the Avant Garden! Laura brings along a cool little device that turns the electrical signals generated by living plant matter into jammable synthesized sounds scapes which she uses as an improvisational backdrop. Host V.J. Hyde learns about Laura's other passion that also happens to be plant-related: gardening! We also hear about Laura's life as a multi-instrumentalist gigging musician, music teacher and the musical journey that has taken her around the world and back again!

Brassie - Episode 21
On episode 21 of Live from the Avant Garden, host, VJ Hyde, and guest, Rachel Brassie, confess to separate counts of insecticide in the course of talking about Brassie's journey as a rising indy star. She recounts memories of picking fresh fruits and veggies in her Grandma's garden and gives listeners insight into her approach to collaborating with artists from around the world while staying grounded in her roots. It's not as garden core murder mystery as it sounds, but comfortably compelling nonetheless. Then Brassie performs her incredible original songs and a cover tune by Raye (https://www.instagram.com/raye/?hl=en) that makes it worth looking the other way for her crimes;)
