How should families prepare a young athlete throughout the year so they arrive ready for preseason? Jonathan Packer, MD, Orthopedic Sports Medicine Physician at the University of Maryland Medical System, Associate Professor of Orthopedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and team physician for University of Maryland Terrapins Athletics, describes a year‑round approach. This episode covers prioritizing sleep and timed nutrition, tracking hydration and fluid loss after practice, immediate recovery strategies (icing, stretching, protein, foam‑rolling), and structured off‑season strength and conditioning. Dr. Packer also reviews injury‑prevention steps—including ACL‑prevention warmups that studies suggest can substantially reduce ACL tears when started 4–6 weeks before preseason—why multi‑sport play can lower overuse risk, how to spot red flags like joint swelling or instability, and communication tips to get kids to report problems early. The guide includes practical at‑home adaptations and guidance on when to seek urgent care or a specialty evaluation, so parents can help athletes stay healthy and ready.

Anticipatory Grief: Grieving Before a Loss
(https://support.doctorpodcasting.com/media/k2/items/cache/d811dcdb65a2f07a9acacda82e2f671b_Generic.jpg)
Am I grieving before my loved one has died, and what can I do about it? Leah Couture, MD, Palliative and Hospice Care Physician at UM St. Joseph Medical Center, explains what anticipatory grief looks like and why caregivers often feel guilty or ashamed for grieving while their relative is still alive. This longer discussion covers how grief can come from losing parts of a relationship, common symptoms (tearfulness, anger, irritability, withdrawal, detachment), and the risks of caregiver burnout. Dr. Couture offers practical coping strategies: naming feelings in a safe space, arranging brief respite to recharge, seeking help from primary care or the palliative team, and connecting with faith communities or peer support. She also points listeners to caregiver guides and support groups such as those from the American Cancer Society and the Alzheimer’s community when specialized resources are needed.
