The characters and stories of the Old Testament form a rich tapestry, revealing both the best and worst of the human condition—and, most importantly, how God relates to us.
Based on the Living Covenant book series, this podcast explores the sometimes messy lives of those who lived under God’s first covenant, asking what these blessedly unsanitised saints can teach us about living out our faith in relationship with a God who promises never to leave us or forsake us.
Most of us know of Nehemiah. Fewer know that his story can't really be understood without two other men who came before him, Zerubbabel and Ezra.
In this episode, Jesse Herford, former pastor and associate editor of Signs of the Times magazine, joins us to explore the interconnected stories of these three leaders who rebuilt Jerusalem after exile—each with their own mission and each with their own blind spots. We talk about what happens when ministry falls apart, why the Bible is more honest about failure than we are, and what it looks like to trust that God is still at work even when everything you built seems to collapse. Jesse also opens up about his own experience in ministry and why he wishes the church talked about failure more.

Esther: God’s promises through a young queen
Esther's story has all the elements of a TV drama: palace politics, a secret identity, a dangerous request and a people on the brink of destruction. But at the centre of it all is a young woman trying to figure out what God is asking her to do.
In this episode, journalist Kira Bridcutt joins us to unpack the story of Esther—a woman chosen for her beauty, thrust into royalty and faced with a choice that could cost her everything. We talk about what it looks like to act courageously when you're scared and how God works behind the scenes even when He's nowhere to be seen. Kira also reflects on her own journey with faith and what Esther's courage has stirred in her.

Jonah: The prophet who hated God’s mercy
Most of us know the storybook version of Jonah: man overboard, big fish, three days, dry land. But the part we often forget to zoom in on is where Jonah sits outside Nineveh, furious that God showed the people mercy.
In this episode, Pastor Quintin Betteridge joins us to unpack one of the Bible's most reluctant prophets. We talk about what Jonah's story reveals about the limits we place on God's grace, why it's easier to receive mercy than to extend it and what it looks like when our image of God is shaped more by culture than by Scripture. Quintin also draws on his experience growing up in apartheid South Africa to explore what it really means to love people we'd rather God just judged.
