Stories We Return To is a podcast about the experiences, ideas, films, books, relationships, and cultural moments that stay with us, and what we notice when we return to them from a different place in our lives. Hosted by Amber Janae, each episode explores identity, creativity, culture, intentional living, and the ways our understanding of ourselves changes over time.
What We Return To Reveals Who We’ve Become: On Nostalgia & the Distance Between Then and Now
What We Return To Reveals Who We've Become explores nostalgia's pull and what happens when familiar experiences meet a changed version of us. In this episode of Stories We Return To, Amber Janae reflects on memory, identity, repetition, and how returning can reveal what still matters, what no longer fits, and what we can only understand with distance.
Stories We Return To is a podcast that takes a deeper look at the stories that shape our everyday lives.
In this introductory episode of Stories We Return To, I am sharing what changed while I was away and why this show needed to evolve with me. Over the last few years, my relationship with work, creativity, success, and even my own identity shifted in ways I did not expect, and those changes made it harder to keep creating from the same place I had before.
I spent a long time trying to figure out what the podcast was supposed to become, but the real question was much bigger than the show itself. I was learning how to trust my own instincts again, how to create without constantly measuring myself against other people’s expectations, and how to make room for the parts of my life and interests that I had spent years trying to separate.
Stories We Return To grew out of that process. This episode is about what happens when the life you built no longer fits in the same way, what it means to begin again without having everything figured out, and why I am approaching this next chapter with more freedom than I have allowed myself in a long time.

The Beliefs That Built Your Life: How Childhood Shapes Creativity, Career, and Self-Concept
How much of your life is being shaped by beliefs you never consciously chose? In this video essay, I explore the connection between upbringing, self-concept, creativity, career development, and personal possibility. We often assume our habits, ambitions, and limitations are simply part of who we are, but many of them were formed much earlier than we realize. This conversation examines how early experiences influence how we express ourselves, pursue opportunities, navigate visibility, and define what feels possible in our lives. While the discussion begins with creativity, it ultimately extends far beyond it. The same beliefs that shape our creative practice often shape our careers, our relationships, our confidence, and the future we allow ourselves to imagine. If you have ever wondered why certain dreams feel difficult to pursue, why you minimize your own potential, or why some opportunities feel available to everyone except you, this episode is for you.
