Designing Your Life on Purpose Series: Fashion — Expression Without Apology (Pt. 9)
In this Musing from the Mind of Dr. SDB, Dr. Stephanie explores how fashion functions as a language of identity, confidence, and personal agency. For many high-achieving women, particularly those in leadership, fashion is often minimized or treated as superficial. Yet the way we dress communicates powerful signals about how we see ourselves and how we expect to be treated.
Continuing the conversation within the Free Pillar of the Fulfilled, Fit, and Free framework—finances, fashion, frolic, and freedom—this episode examines how intentional personal style can support visibility, confidence, and alignment with the woman you are becoming.
Drawing from her own journey through professional environments—from conservative law firms to executive leadership—Dr. Stephanie reflects on how women are often socialized to neutralize their appearance in order to be perceived as serious or credible. But true confidence is not created by shrinking into neutrality. It comes from alignment between your internal identity and your external presentation.
This episode also explores how women, particularly Black women, are often criticized when they express bold or creative style. Using the example of tennis champion Naomi Osaka’s fashion moment at the Australian Open, Dr. Stephanie discusses the cultural double standards that shape how women’s appearance is judged in public and professional spaces.
Fashion, she argues, is not about labels, luxury brands, or trends. It is about agency, identity, and the freedom to show up fully in the spaces where you belong.
When chosen intentionally, personal style becomes part of your leadership presence and your personal brand.
In This Episode

Because freedom without joy is simply another job.
