Burlington Local Frequency: Storms Clear, Juneteenth Celebrations Begin

Good morning, this is your Burlington Local Frequency for 2026-06-18. If you are heading out early in the Queen City area today, keep an eye on the sky. After a night of strong storms that even triggered tornado warnings in parts of the region, including reports from residents in Burlington hearing local weather alerts, conditions are expected to calm but remain a bit unsettled. Plan on muggy air, a mix of clouds and sun, and a chance of an afternoon shower or storm popping up, especially away from the lake. That means it is a good idea to keep the rain jacket by the door, but it should not be a washout kind of day. The big community spotlight this evening is on Juneteenth celebrations. Just down the road in South Burlington, there is a Juneteenth themed SB Nite Out event at Veterans Memorial Park on Dorset Street from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Expect food vendors, family friendly activities, and live entertainment as the community comes together to celebrate Black history, resilience, and joy. It is a great option if you are looking for something after work that is festive but relaxed, and it is an easy hop from Burlington by car, bike, or bus. Looking ahead, Burlington’s own Juneteenth festivities continue to build toward the weekend, with the annual celebration centered around City Hall Park. Community groups, including civil rights and advocacy organizations, are planning to be out tabling, hosting conversations, and sharing resources. If you are downtown over the next few days, it is a perfect time to learn more about local racial justice work, support Black owned businesses, and enjoy performances and activities that make the city feel especially alive in early summer. On the civic front, campaign season is slowly ramping up. Local legislative races for districts covering Burlington, including the Chittenden 18 House seat, are starting to shape up with candidate forums scheduled later this month. That means you will soon see more candidate signs, more meet and greets at coffee shops and parks, and plenty of chances to ask hopefuls where they stand on housing, public safety, climate, and transportation around the city. This has been Burlington Local Frequency. We'll see you tomorrow with more local updates. For more http://www.quietplease.ai Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOta

Burlington's New Budget: Tax Increases, Public Safety Concerns, and Summer Ahead

Good morning, this is your Burlington Local Frequency for 2026-06-17. We start today at City Hall, where Burlington’s newly adopted fiscal year 2027 budget is setting the stage for what our streets, parks, and public safety will look like over the next year. The budget, which covers the period from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, includes investments in city services and infrastructure, but it also comes with a municipal tax increase. For a median Burlington home valued at about 353 thousand dollars, the city estimates an increase of roughly 191 dollars for the year. City officials say that money is aimed at continuing the path of long term fiscal stability while trying to maintain core services residents rely on, including road maintenance, public safety, and community programs.[2] Public safety is a particular focus after recent violent incidents in one Burlington neighborhood, where residents have reported two shootings in just two days. Neighbors say this is part of a pattern of crime they have become uncomfortably familiar with on their street, and the tone is one of both concern and fatigue as they talk about what it feels like to live there right now.[1] Police are investigating and city leaders are under growing pressure to respond with both enforcement and community based solutions. For many families, these events raise real questions about how safe they feel letting kids walk to the park, waiting for the bus after dark, or heading out for an evening run. On a more everyday note, as summer edges in, this is a good day to get outside and make the most of Burlington’s parks and waterfront. With the city budget emphasizing continued support for recreation and public spaces, expect to see ongoing attention to trails, playgrounds, and community events over the coming year.[2] So if you are planning an evening bike ride along the lake, a picnic in a neighborhood park, or just a coffee on a bench downtown, you are directly experiencing where those city dollars go. Local businesses are also adjusting to the new budget landscape, watching property tax changes and city investment plans as they decide whether to expand patios, hire seasonal workers, or add live music nights. For residents, it is a reminder that everything from the feel of Church Street to the quality of smaller neighborhood commercial strips is linked to the decisions being made at City Hall. As we move through the day, keep an eye on city announcements and neighborhood social channels for updates on any public safety developments, community meetings, or pop up events, especially in areas that have recently seen more police activity.[1] These gatherings can be a chance not just to vent, but to shape what safety and community look like block by block. That is your mix of city decisions, neighborhood realities, and everyday Burlington life for today. This has been Burlington Local Frequency. We'll see you tomorrow with more local updates. Early Summer Comfort: Your Guide to a Perfect June Day in Burlington

Good morning, this is your Burlington Local Frequency for 2026-06-15. Waking up in Burlington today, you are stepping into a classic early summer day by the lake. Overnight, temperatures dipped into the mid teens, and this morning starts cool and comfortable around the mid teens as well, with light winds off the lake and mainly clear skies. As the day goes on, expect it to warm into the low to mid twenties, feeling pleasant rather than hot, a great setup for getting outside and enjoying the waterfront and our parks. If you are planning your commute, conditions look good for walking or biking the waterfront trail, with only a small chance of a brief shower later in the day. Transit riders should have an easy morning, and drivers will want to build in a bit of extra time around the usual Lakeshore and QEW pinch points, especially as road work continues in spots across Halton. For families, Burlington schools are into the final stretch of June, so keep an eye on those school and district calendars for year end concerts, athletic events, and award nights that are scheduled throughout this week. Evenings at local high schools are likely to be busy, and parking lots may be fuller than usual around dismissal and event times. If you are looking for something fresh and local, the Burlington area farmers markets are heading into peak season. You will find early summer produce like strawberries, greens, and greenhouse tomatoes, along with local baked goods and coffee, making it an easy stop on your way home from work. It is a good opportunity to support local growers and grab ingredients for a simple weeknight dinner. Health officials in Burlington and across the county are reminding residents to stay tick aware on the trails as vegetation gets thick. That means staying on marked paths, using repellent, and doing a quick check when you get home, especially after a hike at places like Kerncliff Park or Bronte Creek. And with the comfortable weather, today is tailor made for a lakeside walk after work. Spencer Smith Park, the pier, and the Beachway are all great options if you want to unwind, watch the sailboats, or grab takeout from a local restaurant and eat outside.
