44. Audrey’s Story! The Waiting Room! Navigating Fertility, Loss and Hope
This week you will hear Audrey's story! In this episode we honoured Audrey, and her newly released book “The Waiting Room”. The Waiting Room is a powerful collection of real stories from men and women who have navigated the often unseen and misunderstood world of fertility struggles, miscarriage, IVF, pregnancy after loss, donor conception, and the emotional complexities that can come with trying to build a family. These stories speak honestly about the highs and the lows, the heartbreak and the resilience, and the many different paths people take on their journeys to parenthood. What makes this book so unique is that while every story acknowledges loss in some form, they all end with hope. Inspired by Audrey’s own experiences of infertility, pregnancy loss, IVF, and using donor eggs, she made the courageous decision to step away from her role at The Sunday Times to focus on creating a resource that would help others feel less alone. The result is a book that not only offers comfort and connection, but also education, insight, and practical wisdom from those who have walked this path before. Whether you are currently in the waiting room yourself, supporting someone you love, or simply wanting to better understand the realities of fertility and loss, this conversation is one that I hope will stay with you long after you’ve listened. 43. Rachel’s Story! Placental Abruption, Preeclampsia & Black Baby Loss
This week, you will hear Rachel’s story. Rachel’s first daughter was stillborn following a placental abruption after experiencing preeclampsia during her pregnancy. A devastating loss that changed her life forever. When Rachel became pregnant again a few years later, she was advised by the same consultant who had cared for her previously to have a termination. Thankfully, after seeking a second opinion, she received the care, support, and compassion she deserved, leading to the successful birth of her daughter. Rachel is now the Director and Co-Founder of Ebony Bonds, an incredible charity supporting Black families impacted by baby loss. She is a passionate advocate for change, for better outcomes, and for making sure Black families are seen, heard, and supported. Releasing this episode in honour of Black Baby Loss Awareness Week feels especially meaningful, because Rachel truly lives and breathes this work. Her passion, strength, and dedication shine through in everything she does, and I feel incredibly honoured that she trusted me to help tell her story. If you’d like to connect with Rachel or learn more about the incredible work of Ebony Bonds supporting Black families impacted by baby loss, you can follow them on Instagram at @ebonybondsupport and visit www.ebonybonds.org.uk for support, advocacy, and community resources. 42. Keelie’s Story! Black Maternal Health Week!
This week, you will hear Keelie’s story. As we recognise Black Maternal Health Week, this is a time to confront the realities faced by Black women and birthing people and to have honest conversations about what must change, especially here in the UK. Keelie is an ED&I midwife and the founder of Nya Birth Collective, a consultancy dedicated to tackling racial inequalities faced by global majority women and birthing people accessing maternity care in the UK. Her journey into this work started early, even as a student midwife, where she could already see the gaps, the disparities, and the urgent need for change. She didn’t just notice it, she challenged it. Questioning the syllabus, confronting lecturers, and often being left without clear answers, Keelie was already pushing for accountability from the very beginning. She is a dedicated advocate who isn’t afraid to challenge systems. Keelie doesn’t mince her words, she speaks with clarity, honesty, and purpose, making complex and often uncomfortable truths accessible to everyone. What makes her voice so powerful is that she backs everything up with facts. This isn’t just opinion, this is the lived reality of the UK maternity system being brought to light. Although Keelie has not experienced baby loss herself, she is a single mum to her son and has made it her mission to improve outcomes for those who have. She works tirelessly to ensure people receive the support, care, and dignity they deserve. In this episode, we talk about the realities faced by people from the global majority every single day, and how Keelie is actively working to challenge and change those experiences, whether that’s through her role as an ED&I midwife, her consultancy work with trusts and individuals, or speaking at conferences, including at Parliament. Her passion is undeniable, her dedication is inspiring, and her impact is already being felt, from student midwives right through to system-level change. And I, for one, am incredibly grateful for the work she is doing. If you’d like to connect with Keelie or learn more about her work, you can reach her via email at info@nyabirthcollective.com, or follow her on Instagram @midwifekeelie and @nyabirthcollective.
