About Love Unscripted with Emily Freeman
The old rules of dating are gone. And if you’re a high-achiever who has your career, finances, and life together — but love still feels like the one area that isn’t working — you’re not broken. You’ve just been playing by rules that no longer apply. What creates success in business doesn’t create success in relationships. In fact, the very habits that helped you win professionally — overperforming, staying in control, and suppressing emotion — are often the same patterns quietly sabotaging your love life. Love Unscripted breaks down the real dynamics behind modern relationships so you can stop chasing potential and start building partnership that actually enhances your life. Hosted by internationally recognized dating and relationship coach Emily Freeman, this podcast explores the subconscious patterns, attachment dynamics, and relational blind spots that keep high performers stuck in cycles of attraction, situationships, and emotional misalignment. Each episode gives you the insights and frameworks to: • understand your relationship patterns • attract an emotionally available, high-value partner who truly gets you • build both chemistry and compatibility • create lasting partnership without losing, shrinking, or proving yourself Inside the show, we unpack why high performers struggle in love, the subconscious patterns keeping you stuck, and the shifts that change everything — from how you show up on a first date to how you build a relationship that lasts. This isn’t about games, scripts, or pretending to be someone you’re not. It’s about reconnecting with who you are beneath the conditioning, heartbreak, and disappointment — and becoming the person who naturally attracts and builds extraordinary love. Whether you’re a man who keeps attracting emotionally unavailable women, or a woman stuck in situationships wondering why you’re suddenly “too much” when you express your needs, this show helps you see what’s really happening beneath the surface. This is about relational mastery. Because the relationship you build should expand your life — not compete with it. If you’re ready to stop repeating patterns and start building real partnership, you’re in the right place. Everything in Her Life Worked—Except Love. Here’s What Changed
HOW DO YOU CREATE HEALTHY LOVE AFTER YEARS OF RELATIONSHIP PATTERNS? What changes when the rest of your life is working—but love is still the one area that feels harder than it should? In this episode of Love Unscripted, Emily Freeman sits down with client Heather Fernstrom to talk about dating after divorce, self-trust, nervous-system safety, and what changed before Heather entered the healthy, conscious relationship she is in today. Heather shares why she kept opening to love and then pulling away, what finally helped her trust herself differently, and why her current relationship felt almost surprisingly calm after years of emotional highs and lows. IF LOVE IS THE ONE PART OF LIFE THAT STILL FEELS HARDER THAN IT SHOULD... Next Level Love League (NL³) is Emily’s ongoing coaching community for driven, self-aware men and women who want to understand the patterns shaping their relationships and practice creating healthy, lasting love without losing themselves in the process. → Today is the last day to join NL³ before the investment increases: https://emilyfreemancoaching.com/nl3-love-lab-offer (https://emilyfreemancoaching.com/nl3-love-lab-offer) WHAT YOU’LL LEARN Why Heather would open up in dating and then pull back when connection began to feel more vulnerable What changed when the focus shifted from analyzing a partner’s behavior to building deeper self-trust Why a healthy relationship can initially feel unfamiliar after relationships with bigger emotional highs and lows How Heather navigated dating while moving through divorce, raising three children, and running her company The difference between controlling an outcome and advocating for yourself Why Heather stopped trying to immediately “fix” every uncomfortable feeling How she learned to separate old relationship triggers from what was actually happening in the present What made her current relationship feel different from the beginning Why healthy love now feels safe, open, communicative, and calm EPISODE SUMMARY Today, Heather describes her relationship with one word first: Safe. The communication is open. They can move through difficult moments together. There is no chasing, no running, and no constant swing between emotional peaks and crashes. But love did not always feel this way. Heather had already built a successful life. She was running a company, raising three children, investing in her personal growth, and navigating the long legal aftermath of a divorce. And relationships were still the area that did not feel as easy or clear. She describes a recurring pattern of opening to connection, feeling activated, and then closing again. During her work with Emily, the focus began shifting away from trying to figure out the other person and toward understanding what was happening inside Heather herself: how she responded when connection felt high-stakes, what she was making those moments mean, and whether she could trust herself to navigate what happened next. Heather says that learning to trust her own intuition became one of the biggest changes. And that self-trust mattered when she eventually entered a different kind of relationship. Her current partnership did not begin with the dramatic highs she had associated with attraction before. Her nervous system stayed relatively calm. At first, that almost felt strange. But there were not dramatic lows either. Instead, the relationship grew through communication, co-creation, honesty, and the ability to stay connected when life or the relationship became uncomfortable. Heather also shares the less polished part of getting there: grief after divorce, raising three kids while rebuilding her life, moments when the inner work felt messier before it felt better, and learning that discomfort did not always need to be solved immediately. The result was not becoming someone who never gets triggered or never experiences relationship challenges. It was becoming someone who trusted herself enough to meet those moments differently. QUESTIONS ANSWERED IN THIS EPISODE How do you start dating again after divorce? Heather shares that her process included grieving not only the marriage but also the family dynamic she had lost, recognizing when old triggers were influencing a new situation, and giving herself time to heal while gradually opening to love again. Why do I open up in relationships and then suddenly pull away? Heather describes a pattern of opening to connection and then closing when something began to feel unsafe or high-stakes. Emily and Heather discuss learning to notice that response rather than automatically acting from it. Why can a healthy relationship feel less exciting at first? Heather says her current relationship felt much calmer than past relationships. There were fewer emotional peaks—but also fewer painful troughs. The steadiness initially felt unfamiliar because she was used to a different emotional rhythm. How do you learn to trust yourself in relationships? For Heather, self-trust grew by paying attention to her own responses, becoming more receptive to feedback, allowing uncomfortable feelings to exist without immediately fixing them, and learning that she could advocate for herself when something did not feel right. How can you tell whether a trigger is about your current relationship or your past? Heather describes learning to slow down and ask whether her response belonged to what was happening now or whether an old relationship experience was being activated. What does a healthy relationship feel like? Heather describes her current relationship as safe, open, communicative, collaborative, and calm. Difficult moments still happen, but they can talk about them and work through them together rather than treating discomfort as a sign the relationship is ending. READY FOR SUPPORT IN YOUR OWN LOVE LIFE? If you are successful and self-aware but keep thinking, “Why can I figure out almost everything except this?” you do not necessarily need another dating rule. You may need support seeing what is difficult to see while you are inside the pattern. The #1 Thing to Look For in a Partner
WHAT SHOULD YOU ACTUALLY LOOK FOR IN A PARTNER? You can have high standards, know exactly what you want, and still keep ending up with people who check the boxes but cannot show up when the relationship gets real. In this episode of Love Unscripted, Emily Freeman reveals the one quality most people leave off their partner checklist: the willingness and ability to move through the ups, downs, changes, and uncomfortable moments of life with you. And you don’t have to wait years to find out whether someone has it. Emily explains what to look for early in dating, why uncomfortable conversations reveal more than a perfect first few months, and how performing to keep someone interested can prevent you from discovering whether you are actually compatible. READY TO SEE THE PATTERN BEFORE IT COSTS YOU MORE TIME? If you keep finding yourself with people who look right on paper but the relationship still ends in disappointment, there may be a pattern you cannot see while you are inside it. Join Emily live for The Love Lab on Saturday, September 19. In this 4-hour live coaching workshop, you’ll identify the relationship pattern you keep repeating, learn how to recognize it earlier, and find the point where you can interrupt it before the automatic reaction becomes your next decision. → Join The Love Lab: https://emilyfreemancoaching.com/thelovelab (https://emilyfreemancoaching.com/thelovelab) WHAT YOU’LL LEARN The #1 quality Emily believes belongs on your partner checklist Why having high standards is not necessarily the reason dating feels difficult How to recognize a “fair-weather partner” before you have invested years in the relationship What disagreements and uncomfortable conversations can reveal about long-term compatibility Why someone can check almost every box and still be unable to build the partnership you want How performing early in dating keeps you from knowing whether someone actually accepts the real you Why speaking your truth sooner can help the wrong people fall away faster How to stop confusing a relationship that looks good on paper with one that can actually hold real life EPISODE SUMMARY Most partner checklists are built around the life we hope to have. We think about what someone looks like, what they have accomplished, their background, the qualities we want, and everything we hope will make the relationship work. Emily is not asking you to lower those standards. She is asking you to add the criterion most people forget because they would rather imagine they will never need it: Can this person move through real life with me? Life will change. There will be disappointment, transitions, difficult conversations, unexpected opportunities, grief, career shifts, family changes, and moments when neither person has everything figured out. A lasting partner is not someone who guarantees that life will always feel easy. It is someone who is willing and able to stay in relationship with you when things become uncomfortable. And Emily explains that you can start discovering this much earlier than you think. Pay attention to what happens when you disagree. What happens when you tell them something they said hurt you? What happens when you express something you are unsure they will understand? Do they get curious? Can they stay present? Are they willing to have the conversation? Or does closeness only work when everything feels easy? The challenge is that many people never get this information early in dating because they are too busy performing. They say what feels safe. Hold back parts of themselves. Try to be who they think the other person wants. And promise themselves that once the relationship feels secure, they will finally show more of who they really are. But when a relationship is built around performance, you are left with an impossible question: Did they fall in love with me—or with the version of me I was showing them? And the same is true in reverse. When you are projecting onto someone instead of relating honestly, you may not know whether you fell in love with who they actually are either. Speaking your truth earlier may mean fewer people are right for you. That is not failure. It is information. You are not looking for the largest number of people who can check your boxes. You are looking for the person with whom you can create something real, connected, and lasting. QUESTIONS ANSWERED IN THIS EPISODE What is the most important thing to look for in a long-term partner? Emily believes one of the most important qualities is whether someone is willing and able to move through the inevitable changes, discomfort, and challenges of life in partnership with you. How can you tell if someone will be a supportive partner? Watch how they respond to smaller uncomfortable moments. Disagreements, honest conversations, misunderstandings, and moments of vulnerability can show you how someone relates when everything is not effortless. Are my dating standards too high? Not necessarily. Emily’s argument is that you may be maintaining high standards around obvious qualities while unintentionally settling on someone’s ability to truly show up in partnership. How do you know if someone is emotionally capable of a long-term relationship? One clue is their willingness to stay present, communicate, and work through discomfort rather than disappearing or disengaging as soon as the relationship becomes complicated. Why is performing in dating a problem? If you consistently hide parts of yourself or say what feels safest, you cannot fully know whether the other person is connecting with who you really are. It can also make it harder for you to see them clearly. Should you be completely vulnerable immediately when dating? Emily is not suggesting creating conflict or forcing intimacy. The invitation is to stop manufacturing a polished version of yourself and allow honest, appropriate moments of self-expression to give you real information about the connection. How to Manifest Your Ideal Partner (Backed By Psychology)
CAN YOU ACTUALLY MANIFEST YOUR IDEAL PARTNER? Can you manifest the relationship you want—or is manifestation just wishful thinking? In this episode of Love Unscripted, Emily Freeman takes manifestation out of the “woo” and looks at it through the lens of psychology, subconscious beliefs, confirmation bias, and behavior. You’ll learn why vision boards, scripting, affirmations, and visualization may not be working for you, the three subconscious blocks that can interfere with the relationship you want, and Emily’s four-step In Love Method for moving from wanting partnership to actually showing up differently in love. READY TO SEE WHAT’S ACTUALLY KEEPING YOU STUCK? Join Emily live for The Love Lab on Saturday, September 19. In this 4-hour live coaching workshop, you’ll identify the relationship pattern you’re repeating, learn how to catch it while it’s happening, and find the point where you can choose differently—before it costs you more time, peace, or a healthy relationship. → Join The Love Lab: (https://emilyfreemancoaching.com/thelovelab)https://emilyfreemancoaching.com/thelovelab (https://emilyfreemancoaching.com/thelovelab) WHAT YOU’LL LEARN In this episode, Emily explains: What manifestation looks like through a psychological lens How confirmation bias can reinforce your existing beliefs about dating and relationships Why resistance may reveal what is getting in the way rather than mean you should give up The three subconscious beliefs that can interfere with creating the relationship you want Why high achievers can unconsciously treat love like something they have to earn Why healthy, consistent love may feel unfamiliar even when you consciously want it The four steps of the In Love Method: Rewire, Clarify, Attract, Build A simple exercise to begin challenging beliefs your mind currently treats as truth EPISODE SUMMARY If you’ve made the vision board, written the affirmations, visualized your future partner, or tried to “become magnetic” and still haven’t created the relationship you want, Emily argues that the tools themselves may not be the problem. You may be missing what they are bringing to the surface. Through the lens of psychology, the beliefs you already carry can influence what you notice, how you interpret dating experiences, and the choices you make next. Emily introduces confirmation bias: our tendency to notice and favor evidence that confirms what we already believe. So if part of you believes: People always leave. Dating is impossible. I always choose the wrong person. I need to become better before someone will choose me. You may keep noticing experiences that reinforce those beliefs—even while consciously telling yourself you want something completely different. That is where Emily says manifestation becomes useful. The resistance that appears after you visualize what you want—the voice telling you not to get on the apps, not to go on the date, that you’re too busy, that you’ll choose wrong again, or that you need to change yourself first—can reveal the beliefs that are still influencing your behavior. Emily then breaks down three subconscious blocks she sees repeatedly in love: 1. Love is something I have to achieve This is especially common for driven people who learned that doing more, achieving more, or being better earned attention or approval. In dating, that belief can make inconsistency feel compelling because it gives you something to win. 2. Being fully seen doesn’t feel safe You may feel confident at the beginning of a connection, then start overthinking, finding flaws, shutting down, or pulling away as intimacy increases. What looks like suddenly losing interest may sometimes be protection kicking in when there is more at stake. 3. If I experience love, eventually it will leave You may consciously believe you can attract someone while another part of you expects the relationship not to last. That expectation can show up as keeping people at a distance, finding reasons to reject them, avoiding dating altogether, or repeatedly choosing dynamics that recreate instability. Emily then walks through the four steps of her In Love Method: REWIRE — Identify the beliefs currently shaping how you experience love and begin challenging what your mind has accepted as truth. CLARIFY — Get clear not only on who you want, but how you want to feel and experience yourself inside the relationship. ATTRACT — Ask how the version of you who trusts love would show up differently today—without performing or becoming someone else. BUILD — Develop the real relationship skills needed to communicate, navigate conflict, stay connected, and create something lasting once love arrives. Manifestation, in this framework, is not sitting back and waiting for the universe to deliver someone. It is noticing what gets activated when you move toward the relationship you want—and learning to make choices that are aligned with that relationship instead of automatically repeating what feels familiar. QUESTIONS ANSWERED IN THIS EPISODE Can you manifest your ideal partner? Emily approaches manifestation as a process of aligning your beliefs, identity, choices, and relationship skills with the partnership you want—not simply thinking about someone until they appear. Why haven’t my vision boards or affirmations worked for love? Visualization can help clarify what you want, but it may also surface resistance. If the rest of your choices are still being shaped by fear or old beliefs, the visualization alone will not change the pattern. What does confirmation bias have to do with dating? Confirmation bias is the tendency to favor information that supports beliefs you already hold. In dating, that can influence what you notice, how you interpret someone’s behavior, and which experiences reinforce your existing story about love. What are the three subconscious blocks Emily discusses? Love is an achievement. Being seen isn’t safe. Love will eventually leave. How do you change limiting beliefs about relationships? Emily recommends beginning with a neutral belief your mind cannot easily argue against rather than jumping immediately to an affirmation you do not believe. For example, “Everyone plays games” can begin shifting toward “Some people don’t play games.” THE LOVE LAB — SEPTEMBER 19 Knowing your patterns intellectually is very different from recognizing them while you are living them. That is exactly what we’re doing inside The Love Lab. This live 4-hour workshop is for driven, self-aware men and women who want to understand what happens to them when attraction, intimacy, uncertainty, conflict, or fear of loss makes a relationship feel high-stakes. Together, you’ll learn to: IDENTIFY the relationship pattern you’re actually repeating. CATCH the moment it begins taking over. INTERRUPT it while you still have the power to choose differently. Because your relationship pattern rarely feels like a pattern while you’re inside it. It feels like the perfectly reasonable thing to do.
