Welcome to Mach Mentality, the podcast where pilots, veterans, and high-performers talk real-life turbulence—on the flight deck and off.
Hosted by an experienced airline captain and retired fighter pilot, Lieutenant Colonel Eric "Gopher" White (USAF ret.) dives deep into the mindset it takes to lead, survive, and thrive at 40,000 feet and beyond. Whether it's navigating critical in-flight decisions, surviving 9/11 from the cockpit, or talking about burnout and brotherhood, this show goes far beyond aviation.
The Southwest Formula: No PBS. No Widebodies. No Retirement Problems. From a Southwest Airlines Captain
Why do some airline pilots retire at 65 and never fly again — while others immediately go looking for another flying job?
The idea for this episode started with a conversation, not a script. I was comparing retirement accounts with a Southwest captain and noticed his savings were double what I'd built — and bigger than what I'd seen from friends at American and Delta. That single data point raised a bigger question: is it better pay? Better investing? Or something baked into the contract itself that quietly compounds over a 30-year career? This episode is an attempt to answer that.
In this second installment of Contract Chronicles, I sit down with a 30-year Southwest captain (Gulf War vet, one aircraft type his entire career) to unpack what actually separates a good airline career from a great one. This isn't a pay-rate comparison — it's a breakdown of the details most pilots don't think about until they're a decade in: line bidding without PBS, digital pay audits that have recovered tens of millions of dollars for pilots, scope clause protections, tax-advantaged retirement provisions, and the quiet compounding effect of solid work rules over 30 years.
We also swap real-world scheduling and premium pay disputes across airlines, debate what Southwest could still learn from United's contract, and close with some eye-opening numbers on just how many Southwest pilots have retired as multi-millionaires.

29 Years at Delta Airlines — Work Rules, Real Life, and What It's Really Like to Fly for Them with Tyrone Floyd
Hourly pay rates make headlines, but they barely scratch the surface of what life actually looks like under an airline contract. In this episode, Eric sits down with Tyrone Floyd — a Delta A330 captain with 29 years at the airline and Atlanta as his home base — to have an honest, plain-English conversation about what flying for Delta actually feels like day to day.
We dig into sick leave accumulation, vacation bidding and sliding, premium pay (and how white slips, green slips, and silver slips actually work), reserve versus line flying, quality of life trade-offs, and what the first few years really looked like as a junior Delta pilot. Tyrone also shares how 9/11 and Delta's bankruptcy hit his career — including a 40% pay cut and losing his pension — and what he'd say to anyone romanticizing the "good old days" of airline flying.
This one's packed with the kind of nuance that only comes from someone who's lived it. Whether you're a military pilot eyeing the airlines, an aviation student figuring out your path, or a line pilot trying to make sense of contract comparisons — this episode gives you the context the charts and compensation calculators leave out.

Aircrew Down! Easter in Iran
When a USAF F-15E Strike Eagle is shot down in hostile territory, the mission doesn't end—it begins.
In this episode, we go inside the world of Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) with Colonel Cliff Latta, a retired U.S. Air Force A-10 pilot with over 4,000 hours in the A-10 Warthog and decades of combat experience.
From the moment two pilots eject, this conversation breaks down what happens next:
SERE survival on the ground
The race to establish communication
How "Sandy" A-10s take control of the battlespace
Coordinating massive rescue packages with dozens of aircraft
And making life-or-death decisions under fire
As the situation escalates—with multiple survivors, active threats, and even another aircraft going down—you'll hear what it really takes to bring people home.
This isn't about the shootdown.
It's about everything that happens after.
So others may live.
