Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire: Did It Age Into a Halloween Classic?
Halloween has officially entered Magic, Movies AND Melanin, and TT is back with me for one of those Disney Channel movies that feels like somebody unlocked a very specific corner of your childhood memory.
This week, we’re revisiting Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire.
We talk about what we remembered from the movie, what completely caught us off guard watching it again, and whether this thing has actually aged into a Halloween classic or if nostalgia is doing some very heavy lifting.
And listen. Some of these special effects? Disney had faith. I’ll give them that. 😭
We get into the family dynamic, the vampire plot, some casting choices we might have made differently, that musical performance with a crowd that was entirely too hype, and the CGI that had us asking several questions the year 2000 was simply not prepared to answer.
But underneath all the jokes, there’s something comforting about these old Disney Channel Halloween movies. They weren’t really trying to terrify us. They gave us just enough spooky, just enough ridiculous, and a family story underneath it all.
So after more than two decades, does Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire still work?
Or did some of it age better in our memories?

The Proud Family: Who Teaches Black Kids Who They Are?
A lot of us learned pieces of Black history from television before school ever made it feel alive.
For me, The Proud Family was one of those shows.
In this episode of Magic, Movies AND Melanin, I’m going back to three episodes that tried to teach Penny, and the kids watching her, something about who we are and how we understand people whose lives may look different from ours.
We’re revisiting “I Had a Dream,” “Seven Days of Kwanzaa,” and “Culture Shock” and looking at what each episode gets right, where some of those lessons get complicated, and what hits differently watching them as an adult.
That means talking about Black history beyond the classroom, the way family tradition carries culture, and how The Proud Family handled a Pakistani Muslim family during a period when American media was full of post-9/11 fear and stereotypes.
There are also some harder questions sitting underneath all of that. Who gets treated as desirable? Who becomes the joke? What does the show say about darker-skinned girls, class, family roles, and the pressure Penny feels to be the reasonable one in the room?
I love The Proud Family. That’s exactly why I think it’s worth looking at closely!
Who teaches Black kids who they are? And what happens when one of those teachers is the TV in the living room?

The Cheetah Girls 2: Can Friendship Survive the Glow-Up?
The Cheetah Girls 2 gave us Barcelona, “Strut,” bigger musical numbers and a sequel that somehow feels completely different from the movie we met these girls in three years earlier.
But underneath all of that, this is really a movie about four friends getting older and realizing they may not want the same things anymore.
On this episode of Magic, Movies and Melanin, I’m going back to Barcelona to talk about how much changed between 2003 and 2006, from the music and fashion to the way the girls themselves were presented. I get into the bigger production, why filming in Spain mattered, some interesting casting choices, and Raven-Symoné’s very noticeable evolution between the first and second movies.
And because I clearly cannot watch a Disney Channel movie like a normal person, we also need to discuss what some of those styling choices were trying to tell us, how the group dynamic changes once everybody starts finding their own path, and whether The Cheetah Girls 2 still hits nearly twenty years later.
Because maybe growing up together is easy.
Growing in the same direction? That’s where things get complicated.
