THE DOMINANT CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE OF THE PILGRIMS AND PURITANS IN THE 1600s, AND JONATHAN EDWARDS AND GEORGE WHITEFIELD IN THE 1700s, WAS THAT FREEWILL IN SALVATION IS A FICTION. GEORGE WHITEFIELD PREACHED OVER 18,000 SERMONS IN THE FIELDS MOST OF THE TIME, TO 2 1/2 MILLION COLONISTS, WITH CROWDS OF OVER 20,000, SOMETIMES, AND THERE WAS A GREAT RELIGIOUS AWAKING THAT OUR FOUNDING FATHERS MOSTLY EXPERIENCED AS CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS, WHICH WAS THE UNDERPINNING OF OUR MIRACULOUS CONSTITUTION. GEORGE WHITEFIELD WAS THE EVANGELIST AND JONATHON EDWARDS WAS THE INFLUENTIAL PASTOR OF THE AWAKENING & THEY WERE INEXTRICABLY TIED TO RELIGIOUS POLITICS.

FURNACE OF AFFLICTION BY GEORGE WHITEFIELD

SERMON LXV. THE FURNACE OF AFFLICTION. I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.—Isaiah xlviii. 10. GRACIOUS words indeed! words worthy of a God! who has promised that “he will not always chastise, that he will not keep his anger for ever;” but, on the contrary, will take care in the midst of judgment to remember mercy, and if he strike with one hand, will uphold with the other. I hope I need not tell you, my dear hearers, that these words were spoken to comfort the captives in Babylon, who, for their various sins and great backslidings, constrained the God of love, the God of mercy, their covenant God, to send them captives into a foreign soil; upon this, their enemies take occasion to insult them, “Where are now your songs?” say they; give us one of your temple songs, with which you used to pour out your hallelujahs; let us see now whether you can praise him in a strange land. The enemy of souls joining inwardly with them without, makes some that can sing, even afraid “that God hath forgotten to be gracious, that he hath shut up his lovingkind- ness in displeasure,” that the darkness in which they were now involved would not be a temporary, but a perpetual one; and notwithstanding the prophets were sent in mercy of God to comfort them in their trouble, yet many of them were tempted to say, “All men (yea the prophets) were liars;” it is very well if they stopped there, and did not say, God is a liar too. The enemy being thus suffered to break in upon them like a flood, it was high time for the blessed God to lift up a standard against him; and therefore the great Redeemer, the angel of the everlasting covenant, … not for any good foreseen, but he says, “for my own name’s sake;” that the heathen might not say God had utterly forsaken them, he will appear for their relief, and “make them more than conquerors through him that loved them that however dark the season of affliction might be, yet he would let his own people know that all that happened, happened out of love; that it was so far from being true, that they were really cast off from God, that, on the contrary, he intended to overrule these troubles, both foreign and domestic, to bring them nearer to, and at last to lodge them safe in, the world above; well there- fore for their comfort might it be ushered in thus, “For my name’s sake will I defer my anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not 2off.” And to fix their attention and gratitude, it is added, “Behold I have re- fined thee, but not with silver;” for this is so far from being contrary to the everlasting decree or purpose, hid in my bosom, that, on the contrary, it is the fulfilling it; for, saith God, in the words of our text,“ I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.” Though the words are spoken in the singular number, yet they are of a complex and large import: the great God not only speaks to them as a people collectively considered, but particularizes them in this manner; not, “I have chosen you, but I have chosen thee;” for the word of God itself will never, never, never do us good, if it is not applied by the blessed Spirit of God to you and I. The wisdom and kindness of the Holy Ghost deserves our notice; had the prophet gone on and said , “I have chosen you,” unbelief might have said, Ah, this prophecy belongs only to the people of Israel, the words were addressed to those who were under the Jewish dispensation, what have I to do with them? or unbelief would persuade us to say so of such a general promise as this; … God has chosen me in the furnace of affliction.” Perhaps, there is not a more comfortable passage in the whole book of God; I do not know of one that has a greater tendency to silence a complaining child of God, or to make a poor suffering believer happy, and to rest under the prom- ise, to kiss the rod of God that strikes the blow.

HOW DO WE AS AMERICANS GET OUT FROM UNDER THE DOMINION OF THE LAW TO BE FIT FOR HEAVEN?

THE FOLLOWING VERSE IS WHAT WE CALL AN AXIOMATIC VERSE. THAT IS, THIS VERSE IS A KEY VERSE IN WHICH OUR SALVATION IS DEPENDENT UPON. Rom. 7: [1] Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? CAN WE GO TO HEAVEN IF THE LAW STILL HAS DOMINION OVER US? HOW DO WE GET OUT FROM UNDER THE DOMINION OF THE LAW? AS LONG AS WE ARE STILL ALIVE, THE LAW HAS DOMIMION OVER US, OR IN OTHER WORDS, IF WE HAVEN’T DIED A SPIRITUAL DEATH, THE LAW STILL HAS DOMINION OVER US. THE UNDERPINNING OF THIS MESSAGE IS AGAIN: Rom.7 [1] Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? AND WHAT IS THE SOLUTION IN GETTING OUT FROM UNDER THE DOMINION OF THE LAW? THE APOSTLE PAUL GIVES HIS OWN PERSONAL TESTIMONY OF HOW HE GOT OUT FROM UNDER THE LAW. ROM. 7: [9] For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. [10] And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. [11] For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. IF THESE VERSES ABOVE ARE ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL TO OUR SALVATION HOW IS IT THAT EVERY AMERICAN DOESN’T HAVE THEM MEMORIZED OR AT LEAST KNOWN OF, AS WE DO JOHN 3:16. AND IF THEY ARE NOT THAT IMPORTANT, WHY WOULD THE APOSTLE PAUL GIVE HIS OWN PERSONAL TESTIMONY OF ROM. 7:1 IN ROM. 7:9-11. WE WILL, IN THIS MESSAGE TAKE A DEEP THEOLOGICAL DIVE INTO THE EXPANATION AND APPLICATION OF THESE VERSES TO OUR SALVATION AND LIVES. WHY AS AMERICANS HAVE WE NOT EVEN HEARD OF THESE VERSES IF THEY ARE THAT CRITICAL TO OUR SALVATION? WHY HAVE WE NOT HEARD ABOUT PAUL’S OWN PERSONAL TESTIMONY? WHY HAVEN’T WE? THAT IS A GOOD QUESTION IS IT NOT?

   SOUL DEJECTION BY GEORGE WHITEFIELD

Another George Whitfield sermon, entitled Soul Dejection, this sermon is based off of Psalm 42 written by David. Verse one reads as a Hart or Deer panteth after Water-brooks, so my soul panteth after Thee O Lord, and it goes on to say why is my soul cast down, but many of our fast food, freewill friends have no idea how to use the psalms because they use the third use of the law which means that they’re getting the booster shot from the Holy Spirit to follow the law, but in reality the law can only condemn, as Jesus says in Matthew 23 the law is to be used to clean the inside of the cup, that we might see the evil black cat in our heart and repent over it before it escapes and then we won’t need to clean the outside of the cup. David writes in Psalm 38, rebuke me not in Thy wrath O Lord, nor chasten me and Thy hot displeasure, for thine arrows stick fast in me, and Thy hand presses me sore, for there’s no soundness in my flesh, because of thine anger, no rest in my bones because of my sin: Here David is seeing his original is sin, that his original sin is sin before the evil black cat escapes. So if we use the law properly, Jesus said, blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of God. In order to be a Christian we have to be poor in spirit otherwise the kingdom of God will not be ours. Blessed are those who mourn and mourn over what, but over our original sin and they shall be comforted. So the law demands perfection and perfection throws us to the feet of Jesus, crying out for mercy in order that we might find Grace. So when our soul is dejected, we can find a psalm that matches how we feel and we do not let any crisis go to waste. We immediately go to the psalms and find what Psalm matches where we’re at and then we begin to memorize it because we’re so overwhelmed, with maybe world persecuting us, or our own sin nature tempting us, that our soul is dejected and so we go to God, and do as David did, he says in psalm 42, why is my soul cast down, so you explain that to the Lord and so we don’t need to go to a psychiatrist, we go to the psalms whenever we’re overwhelmed with the evil forces from the outside or the evil in our own heart. The psalms are a perfect way to pray and George Whitfield totally understood this and thus entitled this sermon Soul Dejection and in psalm 42 King David talks about his dejection. King David talks about his dejection and his soul is cast down, but then later on he says, then I remembered the Jordan then we remember all the things that God has done for us and we go from our soul being cast down to our soul being lifted up. Listen to the sermon over and over and you’ll find many nuggets of truth in this sermon may the Lord bless the hearing of this sermon to your souls.
