   Scarlet Street | Punk Band

“It's so much better than just sitting there, looking at your virtual rulebook like, what could I possibly do? You just need to make a decision. It's the difference of perspectives. And it's the difference of ‘I've been listening to this particular part so many times that almost I can't hear it a different way.’ And then you bring it to somebody who has not heard your two hours of practicing and struggling and you can get hit with that sudden nugget of knowledge…” In this episode, I sit down with my friends at Scarlet Street, for the first 2.0 guest episode on the podcast. They’re currently in the process of writing their second album, and we spend time discussing their creative process, collaborative efforts, and the evolution of their music going into this second album. We also get into how they’re using discord of all things to collaborate on this album. It was great to sit back down with the band to catch up, and we covered plenty of interesting ground. Ben Hoffman | Industrial Design, Photography, and Music

“A lot of the magic comes from hand sketching where, because it's imperfect, you often misread someone else's sketch. Your brain auto-fills something that they weren't even thinking. It’s that sort of ambiguity really leads to a lot of interesting different ideas. Someone might be thinking that they sketched something one way, and you interpret it completely differently. Out of that, you get a whole new concept.” In this episode, I sit down to chat with Ben Hoffman, an industrial designer at Branch Creative. We dig into various aspects of his design process - which he’s applied to everything from printers to humanoid robots. Outside of his design work, Ben also collects a variety of creative hobbies. We get into music, film photography, and talk about an array of other creative ideas. Max Kaplan | Filmmaker, Writer, Director

“My favorite part is when I've got two completely disparate ideas. I think something really important about our humanity is the ability to hold two separate ideas in our heads. To balance them and consider them at the same time. As an artist, juxtaposing ideas and images are some of the most interesting things we can do. So when I find ways to merge ideas that are completely different that had nothing to do with each other - I maybe even had them years apart - and they can finally come together, those are some of my favorite moments” In this episode, I sit down with Max Kaplan, an independent writer, director, and filmmaker. Currently living in Athens, Ohio, Max is about to graduate from the Ohio University School of Film - and even before graduating has a wealth of experience in the industry. With a passion for filmmaking that ignited at a young age, Max has been crafting films since he was 11. As he gears up for his thesis film, he reflects on his journey, the influence of his experiences, and his creative process. Throughout this chat we delve into his high school projects, his ideas on the more esoteric elements of creativity, and his thoughts on the role of social media in creative expression. Logan Solana | Director

“You've got to be a good director not only for the film but for your crew, your cast, everything. So Whether that means I'm getting better as a director on screen or as I'm getting better as a director for talent or for crew. I guess that's the one thing I try to do each project - just being better, whether that's for myself or for others.” In this episode, I chat with Logan Solana, a director from Columbus, Ohio. We dive into his journey from acting in theater to directing films. We also talk about his approach to storytelling, creating the film's world, and navigating the difficulties and curveballs of film production. Listen in to gain some unique insight and tips from Logan’s filmmaking experience. Jack Miller | Director of Photography, Gaffer

"I think filmmaking is certainly, when it comes to a creativity perspective, about breaking the rules. I think that's where innovation happens, so that's just kind of part of my philosophy. Obviously, you wanna have a foundation. You wanna have a general idea of what we're trying to go for, but if you can kind of sit back and let an idea just come to you, then you can kinda really create something awesome.” In this episode, I sat down with Jack Miller, an accomplished director of photography and gaffer based out of Ohio. Jack shares insights into his career in the film industry, discussing his approach to projects and his evolution through the industry that lead him to cinematography. We talk about his journey through film, the role of social media for creatives, and much more. Garrett Collier: Comedy Specials & Content Creation

"In a lot of the same ways people approach sports, athletics, martial arts, and physical disciplines, you're gonna suck and it's gonna be hard at first. But it's about pushing through, just showing up, and doing the work. I literally use the term 'putting the reps in,' like getting those 10,000 hours in. You'll get better at whatever it is, whether it's painting, videography, editing, motion graphics…." In this episode I sit down to chat with multifaceted producer and content creator Garrett Collier. Garrett is the head of production with FourByThree Productions. We talk about his role at Four By Three and what it’s like producing so many comedy specials, how he got into video production in the first place, martial arts, and much more.
