   Leadership Lessons Beyond the Uniform

Some people seem to have entrepreneurship in their blood. For Victor “Vic” Jones, it started long before he had a business plan, a company name, or even a driver’s license. He was finding ways to earn money as a kid, running a flea-market operation in middle school, and managing a landscaping business before he graduated from high school. That drive followed him into the Marine Corps and eventually into a career that has included businesses in transportation, insurance, real estate, and several other industries. Vic Jones is a Marine Corps veteran and entrepreneur who has spent years thinking about what it really takes to build something that lasts. We talk about the lessons he carried from the military into business, why he believes a company should eventually be able to operate without its owner, and how he weighs risk before putting money into a new opportunity. Vic also shares why he cautions people against walking away from a steady paycheck too soon and why starting small can sometimes be the smartest way to learn. We also get into the financial side of protecting what you build, from maintaining a cushion for unexpected expenses to planning for insurance, long-term care, and the people who depend on you. But for Vic, success is about more than the size of a bank account. Our conversation touches on health, family, faith, service, and his commitment to helping other veterans find their footing in business and in civilian life. It’s a wide-ranging conversation about making money work for you without letting it become the thing that runs your life. Episode Highlights: [03:30] Vic Jones shares how earning access to movies and video games as a kid grew into flea-market sales, landscaping work, and an early passion for entrepreneurship. [08:26] Building businesses that can generate income without depending entirely on the owner becomes the long-term goal. [10:15] Marine Corps training reinforces leadership, preparation, discipline, and an attention to detail that later carries into business. [14:55] Leaving room for unexpected expenses and maintaining a financial cushion can make setbacks much easier to absorb. [18:07] New business opportunities are weighed by risk, potential return, time commitment, cash flow, and whether they can create lasting value. [21:46] Life insurance, mortgage protection, and other financial tools can help families protect what they have built and provide for the people who depend on them. [24:43] Building wealth means little if the pursuit of success comes at the expense of health, family, or quality of life. [27:22] Annuities offer a more conservative option for people who want to put money aside without taking the risks that often come with entrepreneurship. [29:45] Military service can provide veterans with valuable leadership experience that does not always translate neatly onto a civilian résumé. [32:42] Starting a business after military service begins with evaluating your life, finding mentors, and testing an idea on a manageable scale. [35:54] Calculated risks allow entrepreneurs to learn from failure without putting their entire financial future on the line. [37:18] Keeping personal spending small relative to income can create room to build wealth while still rewarding yourself for meaningful progress. [40:31] Financial goals work best when money remains a tool rather than becoming a constant source of stress or control. [42:09] Royal Limousine began partly as a way to create jobs and a supportive work environment for fellow veterans. [45:40] The HERO Center brings veterans together through community events, mentoring, and opportunities to build meaningful connections. Family Business, Lasting Legacy

Keeping a business going takes more than doing good work or bringing in the next customer. Payroll still has to be met. Problems come up without warning, and some decisions have no clear answer. In a family business, there is another layer to all of it. You are trying to move forward while protecting the name, the sacrifices, and the years of work that came before you. Today’s guest knows about keeping a family business together and creating a lasting legacy. I’m excited to introduce Laura Bailey, president and owner of Bibey Machine & Fabrication Co. Her parents founded the company in 1978 to provide precision machining, fabrication, welding, and mobile services throughout North Carolina’s Triad region. Laura joined the business in 1999 after working for UPS and Ralph Lauren. She began in an administrative role and gradually took on more responsibility before moving into leadership. Laura also holds a master’s degree in World War II studies, serves with Triad Honor Flight, and helped write A Hero and Advocate for All Others. On today’s show, we talk about Laura’s path into the family business and the lessons she learned from watching her parents build it. She shares her approach to cash flow, spending, mentorship, and taking care of the people who depend on the company. We also discuss earning respect in a male-dominated industry, making decisions based on reality instead of emotion, and knowing when to ask trusted experts for help. We also learn about her work with veterans and the personal connection behind her military research. Episode Highlights: [03:55] Laura explains how Bibey Machine & Fabrication Co. handles everything from small repairs to large production projects. [06:16] A typical day involves solving problems, planning for growth, and supporting employees throughout the company. [07:31] Laura shares how working for UPS and Ralph Lauren prepared her to join the family business in 1999. [10:36] The Triad Business Journal’s Family Business Award became a meaningful moment for the family and the entire team. [12:44] Good work can speak louder than labels, assumptions, or the feeling of being underestimated. [15:01] The conversation turns to authenticity, unexpected career paths, and accepting where life leads. [17:17] Her parents’ financial struggles shaped a careful approach to cash flow and business responsibility. [20:40] A major turning point came when her father stepped away and trusted the next generation to keep the company running. [23:33] Avoiding overspending starts with buying only what the business or household can realistically support. [25:09] Trusted experts can help answer the questions a business owner may not even know to ask. [28:32] A strong personal and professional support system helps ease the pressure that comes with leadership. [30:16] Small-business owners benefit from realistic plans and stronger connections to community resources. [32:35] The discussion shifts to Triad Honor Flight and the experiences that deepened her connection to veterans. [35:20] A grandfather’s World War II service inspired further study and a commitment to preserving veterans’ stories. [38:00] A class project led to meeting veteran Vernon Schmidt and co-writing *A Hero and Advocate for All Others*. [41:59] Two Vietnam veterans’ very different reactions to helicopters reveal how deeply wartime memories can remain. [45:25] Every Honor Flight brings a different experience and can be healing for veterans, families, and volunteers. [48:24] The lightning round includes an unforgettable emergency repair for a crematorium. [50:08] A reminder not to become so focused on money that you forget to live your life. Budgeting and Leadership from a Good Samaritan

We talk a lot about taking command of our finances, but today’s guest knows a thing or two about command in the truest sense of the word. Retired Air Force Lieutenant General Jim Vechery joins us to share what decades of military leadership can teach us about budgeting, stewardship, faith, and staying steady when life gets uncertain. Jim served our country for more than 31 years, leading thousands of service members and commanding operations at McConnell Air Force Base and Travis Air Force Base before serving as Deputy Commander of U.S. Africa Command. In this conversation, Jim reflects on servant leadership, why the best leaders focus on people first, and how a clear plan can keep both a mission and a budget from turning into constant crisis. We also talk about Jim’s current work with Samaritan’s Purse, where he helps lead international disaster relief through the Airlift Response Center in Greensboro. From managing complex resources to giving with purpose, Jim brings a grounded, faith-filled perspective on what it means to use money, time, and influence well. Episode Highlights: [02:32] Retired Air Force Lieutenant General Jim Vechery’s 31-year career included leading teams at McConnell Air Force Base and Travis Air Force Base before serving as Deputy Commander in U.S. Africa Command. [05:08] A budget is a tool for freedom and mission success because it creates a plan, sets priorities, and keeps every challenge from becoming a crisis. [08:36] Staying committed to a plan requires taking the long view, breathing through the crisis, and remembering that ups and downs are part of life. [11:15] Nonprofit leadership requires balancing urgent needs with long-term sustainability while still keeping the larger mission in view. [13:47] We learn about his current work with Samaritan’s Purse that centers on international disaster relief through the Airlift Response Center in Greensboro. [16:48] The rapid-fire round covers strong black coffee, the Bible as a leadership book, and the practical leadership lessons found in Lincoln on Leadership. [19:24] The wonder of flight still resonates, from sunsets at 40,000 feet to the science that allows massive aircraft to get airborne. [21:11] Stewardship is the one word chosen to describe a healthy philosophy of money and the responsibility to manage resources well. [24:17] We close with gratitude for service and a reminder that servant leadership can shape how people handle money, faith, and everyday decisions. Making Success Make Cents: The CPA Playbook

Money decisions are rarely just about the math. Usually, they’re about that sinking feeling you get when you realize you might be in over your head. For most of us, that moment doesn't come with a warning label. It just sneaks up quietly right as a life change or a new business venture starts getting more complicated than we expected. Kim Hall joins us today as a CPA and business owner who actually lived that transition herself. She walked away from a comfortable corporate accounting career to build her own firm from scratch, so she’s been in the trenches. Since then, she’s helped everyone from individuals with simple tax questions to entrepreneurs trying to figure out a full-scale business plan. Her goal isn't just to file a return and move on. She helps people build a strategy so they can make smart calls before a problem ever shows up. We’re diving into the real-world difference between just "doing your taxes" and actually planning for them, plus how to know when it’s finally time to stop DIY-ing and bring in a professional. Kim also shares some high-stakes advice on keeping your personal and business money separate, planning for the long haul, and spotting financial fraud before it has a chance to drain your bank account. Episode Highlights: [06:02] Kim shares how her decision to start a CPA firm was driven by wanting more control over her schedule and being present for her kids. [07:27] We learn how new clients typically reach out for help and what those first conversations look like. [09:21] Kim walks through common setup considerations like entity structure, taxes, and registrations. [10:26] We break down the misconception that filing taxes online is the same as working with a CPA. [11:37] The conversation turns to how often business owners mix personal and business finances and why that creates problems. [12:14] We talk about helping clients properly set up accounts and systems to stay organized and audit-ready. [13:21] Kim emphasizes that being skilled at a trade is very different from understanding the financial side of a business. [14:03] She reflects on the early challenges of starting her firm, including the financial adjustment and building from zero. [15:06] Kim explains why many businesses aren’t profitable in the first year and what to expect financially. [16:02] A turning point comes from social media advertising, which helped her quickly grow her client base. [17:37] The conversation shifts into tax season and the importance of understanding preparation versus planning. [18:04] Kim clearly defines tax preparation as reporting the past and tax planning as making proactive decisions. [22:44] We dive into fraud trends, including email scams and fake payment instructions targeting businesses. [23:16] Real-world examples highlight how small details, like a changed domain name, can lead to major losses. [24:45] Kim shares why reaching out early before tax season can make a big difference. [25:35] We talk about the importance of budgeting for unexpected expenses in both personal and business finances. [26:02] Planning emerges again as the key habit that separates successful businesses from struggling ones. [27:04] Thoughts on building trusted relationships with financial institutions and advisors. One More Mission, A Lifetime of Honor

Some people talk about making a difference, and some people actually do the work. Today's guest is firmly in the second category. Alison Huber is the Executive Director of Triad Honor Flight, a 100% volunteer-driven nonprofit that takes local veterans on a one-day trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials built in their honor. What started as a personal mission became something much bigger, and the stories that have come out of it are the kind that stay with you. Running a nonprofit is no small thing, and Alison does it while holding down a full-time career and, somehow, a personal life. In this conversation, she walks us through what it actually takes to get a 501c3 off the ground, the costs most people don't anticipate, and how she managed to launch an organization in March of 2020. Yes, that March of 2020. Her financial instincts are sharp, her resourcefulness is real, and the way she thinks about money, both for Triad Honor Flight and in her own life, is something anyone can take something from. We also get into the details that set Triad Honor Flight apart, and I do mean details. From the jackets to the stamps on the cards they send after every flight, Alison thinks about all of it. If you've ever wondered how to stretch a dollar further, how to build something meaningful from scratch, or how to stay organized when life is pulling you in every direction, this conversation is worth your time. CyberSense

This month is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, so we have a guest who can help make sense of what all of this really means. Cyber threats have a way of sneaking into our everyday lives through emails, texts, or a call that sounds just convincing enough to make you hesitate. It’s easy to think cybersecurity is something for IT experts, but in truth, it’s something we all have to think about. Our guest today is Tommy Riggins, Managed Services Account Executive at Zirrus Technology Solutions. He spends his days helping organizations protect their systems and their people, but what stands out most is how clearly he talks about it. No jargon, no scare tactics, just solid, practical advice. Tommy shares what actually works: longer passwords, regular software updates, multi-factor authentication. None of it’s complicated, but together, it makes a big difference. We also talk about how artificial intelligence is changing the game, what kinds of scams are showing up most often, and what to do if you ever get caught off guard. Tommy’s take is steady and reassuring. He reminds us that cybersecurity is about awareness not fear. And once you start thinking about it that way, it becomes part of how you move through your day. Mortgages Made Simple

Buying a home is a milestone, but getting there often means facing a maze of mortgage terms, credit requirements, and unexpected costs. For someone starting out, it’s not just about coming up with a down payment, it’s about understanding the bigger picture of what lenders look for and what it really takes to qualify. Jennifer Kettlewell from myCUmortgage walks through that picture in plain terms. She explains why credit scores carry so much weight, how conventional and government-backed loans differ, and why things like escrow accounts and PMI end up surprising so many buyers. Her advice on building credit, starting small with both revolving and installment loans, and preparing for upfront costs feels especially relevant for younger buyers who want to avoid common missteps. The conversation doesn’t shy away from the practical side either. Debt-to-income ratios, the role of student loans, and even how buying a car too soon can derail a mortgage application all come up. Taken together, it’s a realistic guide that helps first-time buyers see the process clearly and understand how to prepare before they start shopping for a home. Episode Highlights: [02:08] Jennifer explains the two main types of mortgages: conventional and government-backed. [04:06] Discussion on how credit scores impact mortgage eligibility and interest rates. [04:35] Jennifer shares tips for building credit as a young adult, including using credit cards responsibly. [06:05] Advice on using installment loans and trade lines to establish credit history. [06:59] Breakdown of down payment expectations for first-time homebuyers and program options. [09:08] Jennifer outlines additional upfront costs like closing costs, escrows, and prepaids. [10:56] Conversation about private mortgage insurance (PMI) and how credit scores affect the cost. [11:56] Debt-to-income ratios explained for different mortgage types, including conventional, FHA, USDA, and VA. [13:40] How student loans are factored into mortgage qualification. [14:35] Property taxes and homeowner’s insurance increases and their effect on monthly payments. [15:51] Budgeting for home maintenance and saving for future expenses. Cracking The Credit Code: How Credit Scores Work and Why They Matter with Valerie Lentz

A credit score might seem like just a number, yet it can raise or lower the cost of everything from a car loan to your monthly insurance bill. Joining me is Valerie Lentz, Senior Vice President at Performance Pro Consulting and a self‑described credit nerd who has spent more than two decades teaching credit‑union teams how to read reports line by line and spot the stories hidden in the fine print. Valerie breaks down what those three digits really measure, why on‑time payments and low card balances carry the most weight, and how even a single late fee can be repaired with smart moves like share‑secured loans or starter cards. We also tackle the biggest misconceptions; income and a wallet full of new cards do not boost your score, and we share practical tips for building credit from scratch, checking all three bureaus before big purchases, and steering clear of soaring variable‑rate cards. If you have ever wondered how to crack the code on credit and keep more money in your pocket, this conversation will make the mystery feel a whole lot smaller. Episode Highlights: [01:45] Valerie can read a credit report better than anybody I've ever seen. [02:00] A credit score is a number ranging from 850 to 300. Credit scores predict the rate you will pay and can even determine if you get a job. [03:03] Landlords use credit reports to qualify you to rent and to determine your security deposit. Auto insurance companies also pull a copy of your credit report to determine premiums. [05:20] Misconceptions about credit scores include shopping for credit can actually hurt you. Stick with two to three new counts a year. Credit score is not based on your income. Being an authorized user can help you or hurt you depending on the credit of that account. [07:40] Credit monitoring using services like Credit Karma. [09:05] Building a good credit history from scratch. [10:57] Start building credit before you need it. [12:49] Recovering from credit mistakes like a missed payment. Strategies include to start making payments on time and continue making them on time. A secured loan with on time payments could also help. [15:34] If you see something inaccurate you can go to the credit bureaus: TransUnion, Experian and Equifax and report it. [17:55] Payment history and how you handle credit card limits affect your score. Keep it around 30% to maximize your credit. [20:21] Keep in mind the type and amount of interest that you are paying on your credit cards. [22:24] Make sure you read the disclaimers and disclosures on your card. [23:03] We learn who has inspired Valerie the most when it comes to her use of credit. FI SAFE and the Fight Against Financial Abuse with Shirley Senn and Jonathan "JT" Taylor

Financial freedom isn’t just about building wealth; it can be a lifeline. In this episode, we’re diving into a crucial but often overlooked issue: financial abuse in domestic violence situations. Survivors face countless barriers when trying to break free, and economic control is one of the biggest reasons many feel trapped. But what if there were real financial solutions to help them regain independence? Today, we’re joined by Shirley Senn and Jonathan “JT” Taylor, co-founders of FI SAFE, an initiative dedicated to helping survivors navigate financial abuse and rebuild their lives. With decades of experience in the credit union industry, Shirley and JT are on a mission to show how credit unions can be a powerful force for change, offering financial tools, support, and pathways to safety that traditional banking often overlooks. We’ll explore the realities of financial abuse, the role financial institutions can play, and the concrete steps credit unions can take to support survivors. If you’ve ever wondered how financial empowerment can change lives, this is an episode you won’t want to miss. Episode Highlights: [01:18] FI SAFE is about financial safety for all. It focuses on the financial abuse aspects of domestic violence. [02:29] We learn about how “JT” has a fire in his belly for taking on financial abuse. [04:20] Shirley's been in the credit union industry for 30 years. [05:23] Studies show that 94 to 99% of domestic abuse survivors have been exposed to economic and financial abuse. [06:02] There was a need for products and services in credit unions to specifically help these women. [07:33] Shirley's challenges for credit unions to partner and help with assisting these people. [08:54] How financial abuse plays a role in domestic violence situations. Without access to finances it's almost impossible to break away from the situation, [11:38] It's about empowering people with options to free their funds and heal their credit, so they can get back on their feet. [13:02] FI SAFE is trying to put all of the pieces together to create a smooth path for survivors to break away. [13:47] One out of three women have suffered sexual violence or domestic abuse. 75% have stayed with an abusive partner, because they had nowhere to go. [18:16] Abuse cannot survive in the light. [21:05] Purple Bridges is a charitable arm focused on the process of getting folks from the outside world over to a resource center and then to a credit union. [25:32] Abusers are obsessed with having all of the control. They've stripped away the survivors' identity. Not having a credit score will affect the ability to get all the basic needs to survive. [28:37] We need to think about the impediments we've put in place that are preventing these people from getting on their feet and pulling back a little. [30:08] Compassionate banking opportunities include training employees to recognize someone who may be in an abusive situation and need a different approach.
