Make Teaching Sustainable explores how teachers and administrators can avoid burnout through progressive ideas about teaching, learning, school leadership, and school culture. In each episode, Paul Emerich France explores different facets of teaching related to sustainability, analyzing the resources, practices, and cultural inputs that can send schools on a path to sustainability.
Time and time again in the #SustainableTeaching Project, teachers shared with Paul stories of mistreatment. In this final episode of Season 1, Paul shares chapters of his own story as a teacher, grappling with the question: Are teachers being mistreated? Or is this just what we signed up for? Regardless, what do we do about it?

S1 E9 | Catlin Tucker on Learner Agency
At first, many teachers think that giving kids more autonomy in the classroom will be messier and less sustainable, but what if building learner agency was actually more sustainable?
Paul talks with Dr. Catlin R. Tucker, author of The Shift to Student Led (https://catlintucker.com/2022/11/the-shift-to-student-led/), about how building learner agency can actually make teachers’ lives easier. When we give kids responsibility and choice in the classroom, it not only means teachers share the demands of learning with students, it also means that kids learn how to stand on their own two feet. We can support this shift to increase learner agency through assessment practices, technology integration, and mindful curriculum design, Tucker shares.

S1 E8 | Alex Tougas on Time, Time, Time!
Time is often one of the biggest concerns that teachers have with regard to sustainability. How do we solve this problem?
Paul talks with Alex Tougas this week about some innovative ideas around giving teachers more time. They also unpack societal attitudes towards teaching. Why is it that so many people think teachers are lazy? And what other assumptions do folks make about teachers? Paul and Alex ponder some of the reasons for this, from the implicit biases laid upon a female-dominated profession, in addition to the ancillary systems that make it even harder for teachers to do their jobs. You can reach out to Alex on Twitter at @ajteaches.

S1 E7 | Jenny Lewis on Positive Intelligence
How might bolstering emotional intelligence contribute to #SustainableTeaching?
Paul talks with Jenny Lewis this week about the importance of Positive Intelligence. No, this isn’t a promoting toxic positivity, but instead a way to help students be more emotionally intelligent in our classrooms, so they, too, can carry the emotional demands of learning along with teachers. S1 E6 | Emily Dia and Matt Hickson on building learner agency
How might building learner agency help to #MakeTeachingSustainable? And how did we get to a place where teachers feel like they have to work themselves ragged to be good teachers?
Paul talks with Emily Dia and Matt Hickson from the Modern Classrooms Project. They challenge us to rethink our teaching, making students partners in the process of assessment and differentiating learning. S1 E3 | Jill Nettels on the Need for Self-Reflection
How might self-reflection help both teachers and learners? And what is required for teachers and learners to get more time for self-reflection?
Paul talks with JIll Nettels about the immense workload many teachers carry, along with the amount of time it takes to complete it. Not only is it challenging to plan, prepare, and assess learning, it also makes it hard to find time to reflect.

S1 E1 | Education's Climate Crisis
Much like Earth itself, education is experiencing a climate crisis. The situation isn’t yet hopeless, but simply telling teachers to take better care of themselves will not solve the problem. Instead, we must change the way we conceptualize and enact sustainable instruction in classrooms. We can do this by embracing six mindset shifts for #SustainableTeaching:
Humanity over Industry
Collectivism over Individualism
Empowerment over Control
Minimalism over Maximalism
Process over Product
Flexibility over Fixedness
For more information on the six mindset shifts, you can check out Make Teaching Sustainable: Six Shifts Teachers Want and Students Need (https://www.ascd.org/books/make-teaching-sustainable?variant=123011).
