Importance Reasons Rivers Dredging is NOT Viable in South Sudan; White Nile Tributaries | Citizens Said No to Egypt & Greedy Leaders to Dredge Our Rivers | Majok Wutchok | Maked Talks

The river Nile is the world’s longest river, stretching over 4,000 miles from its sources in Lake Victoria to its end in delta on the Mediterranean Sea. The river Nile is also the longest river in Africa, and its tributaries are vital to the continent’s economy and ecology. There is growing evidence that dredging river Nile tributaries, particularly the Naam and Bahr el Ghazal rivers, can have a significant and long-term impact on the river system, ecological, human and biodiversity. Contextually, this practice has a number of negative consequences for river systems. For instance, allowing the Egyptians to dredge Naam river and the Bahr el Ghazal river in South Sudan can lead to the river becoming shallower and wider, making it more susceptible to flooding. Furthermore, the Bahr el Ghazal river can become narrower and faster-flowing as a result of dredging, this can make it more difficult for fish and other aquatic creatures to migrate up and down the river. However, the long-term impact of dredging these tributaries could be devastating. The Nile river and its tributaries provide water for agriculture, industry and human consumption for over 300 million people in 11 countries. As the population in the Nile basin continues to grow, so does the demand for water. In order to meet this demand, river basins are being dredged to deepen and widen river channels. Dredging is the removal of sediments and other materials from the bottom of river basins, lakes, and other water bodies. It is often used to maintain navigation channels, improve water flow for transportation or irrigation, or to develop aquatic habitats for fish and other wildlife. However, dredging can also have negative consequences for the environment, local communities, and long-term sustainability of the river system. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/majok-wutchok/message

Mr. Ateny Wek Ateny | Presidential Press Secretary | Made An Apology to South Sudanese Women After His Speech Went Viral

An Apology Letter from Mr Ateny Wek Ateny to South Sudanese Women. Presidential Press Secretary Ateny Wek Ateny has penned an apology statement over his recently published remarks on women saying his utterances were misconstrued. A video surfaced and went viral on July 14, depicting the government official speaking in Dinka, in a wedding, confessing his undying thirst for beautiful women. But after the outburst that followed the leaked video; where some women called for his resignation, Mr Ateny opened up about the matter and offered an apology although cagily. ‘‘I want to appeal to everyone; both women and girls, men and boys who felt inadvertently hurt by my remarks to find a place in their hearts to pardon me, as I was not intending to demean women in any way. ‘‘As a public figure, I understand that the lines between my official duties and social roles are blurred. As such, I am sorry that my statement at a social function hurt you, albeit being portrayed out of context,’’ his statement partially read. Ateny clarified he made the utterances in Jieng (Dinka dialect) on February 5, 2021, at a wedding to advise the couple ‘‘as I have done on those occasions’’. He was categorical that his statement was tailor-made to advise the groom to ‘check his appetite’ and avoid the trap of polygamy which is a cherished tradition among the Dinkas. ‘‘I was speaking as a Dinka culturalist in which case I cautioned the groom to stick to one woman as opposed to what the Dinka culture promotes.  Via comedy, I told the groom not to be like me and others who are pro-polygamy,’’ Ateny stated. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/majok-wutchok/message
