The Client Is NOT Always Right (Here's What They Are)
The client is always right? Not in my experience. After decades of architecture commissions, custom furniture builds, and running design projects with six-figure fees, here's how I actually manage client expectations — setting professional boundaries, pricing for uncertainty, handling indecisive clients, and knowing when you're a commodity vs. a creative they specifically want. I cover how to build client trust without appealing to authority, why I use full-size material samples instead of tiny swatches, how to structure hourly estimates around deliverables, and why I charge high-trust clients LESS.Question from AJ Joshi — drop yours in the comments and we'll turn it into a future episode.0:00 Today's question: managing client expectations 0:23 "The client is always right" — not true 1:00 The rules of the partnership 1:38 Why my house took 1 month and yours takes 8 2:39 The big windows story: earning client trust 4:31 Why "15 years of experience" wears thin 5:57 The trap you set while landing the client 6:46 Hourly breakdowns tied to deliverables 8:27 Tight budgets need more design time 9:34 Stop choosing floors from tiny swatches 11:23 Turn big decisions into memorable events 12:17 Pricing value, risk, and uncertainty 13:19 The $1,600 vs $3,800 console 15:14 If you've been comparison shopped, you're a commodity 16:44 Why I charge trusting clients less 18:58 Overrated/Underrated 19:01 Vaulted ceilings 19:35 Foyers 20:28 Zaha Hadid 22:20 "Secret underground mansion" YouTube builds 24:31 Farmers markets 25:58 Rooftop bars 27:25 Adobe 28:45 Flow state 30:51 Architectural Digest 31:33 Electric rideables 33:26 Investigative journalism 35:10 Starting a YouTube channelCheck out Yoonj's investigative reporting: https://www.youtube.com/@UCTR1ZDG4Ahy2AZXFc7-s4XQ Plus this week's Overrated/Underrated: vaulted ceilings, Zaha Hadid, farmers markets, rooftop bars, Adobe, flow state, Architectural Digest, e-bikes, and starting a YouTube channel.DIY and Build videos are on Ben's main channel HomeMade Modernhttps://www.youtube.com/user/HomeMadeModernHome Building projects are on the Modern Home Project https://www.youtube.com/@TheModernHomeProjectfollow Ben on instagram for project updates: https://www.instagram.com/benjaminuyeda/?hl=en

Why Does Everything Look The Same? Blame This 3-Word Phrase
"Less is more." "Good design is invisible." "As little design as possible." You've heard these design rules your whole life — but what if they were never true? In this episode we trace where "less is more" actually came from (Mies van der Rohe and the Industrial Revolution), why advice that made sense in the 1920s slowly turned our homes, furniture, and products into the same beige, gray, mass-produced sameness — and why designers like Hans Lorei ("good design should make you a little nervous") are suddenly resonating with millions of people tired of minimalism. Then we look forward: AI and generative design are setting up a second industrial revolution — a digital production revolution — and the same flattening is about to happen to everything made with a prompt. We break down why machine logic normalizes design (from injection-molded power tools to Dieter Rams, Braun, and the iPod), and predict the two things that will thrive in an AI-saturated world: the boldly weird and the truly handcrafted.Plus: Overrated or Underrated — corded tools, hotel bars, Vans, networking events, Substack, NDAs, IKEA kitchens, museums, horror movies, and pellet grills.Chapters:00:00 — "Less is more" and other design lies02:43 — Why everything got so beige06:13 — Dieter Rams, Braun, and the iPod08:24 — The next industrial revolution: AI13:38 — What survives: the weird and the handmade15:46 — Overrated / UnderratedDIY and Build videos are on Ben's main channel HomeMade Modernhttps://www.youtube.com/user/HomeMadeModernHome Building projects are on the Modern Home Project https://www.youtube.com/@TheModernHomeProjectfollow Ben on instagram for project updates: https://www.instagram.com/benjaminuyeda/?hl=en

A $2 Lamp Got Me a Museum Commission
A concrete pendant lamp made from a 2-liter soda bottle and $2 of concrete helped lead to one of my biggest commissions ever, a series of carved wooden benches for the Dataland Museum in LA. The people behind it had been following my DIY projects since they were in architecture school, 9 years before they ever had a reason to hire me.In this episode of Maker Ranch, I break down "escalation vs. scaling", why taking on progressively bigger, harder projects beats manufacturing more of the same, and why your small, cheap experiments are the most valuable thing in your portfolio. Plus: why DIY taught me more than a very expensive design grad school, what to do when you're unhappy with a finished project, and why renting is the perfect excuse to build. Then we close with Overrated/Underrated: In-N-Out, carpenter's pencils, treehouses, hot tubs, AirPods, the beach, and consumer CNCs.0:00 How small projects lead to big opportunities1:31 Escalation vs. scaling3:41 The plastic bottle → guitar pipeline4:34 How the museum commission actually happened5:41 Take your small projects seriously6:34 Making things for $2–3 in materials8:04 When you're unhappy with your work8:40 DIY is grad school for designers10:16 Overrated / UnderratedDIY and Build videos are on Ben's main channel HomeMade Modernhttps://www.youtube.com/user/HomeMadeModernHome Building projects are on the Modern Home Project https://www.youtube.com/@TheModernHomeProjectfollow Ben on instagram for project updates: https://www.instagram.com/benjaminuyeda/?hl=en
