Thomas Higgins | From South Georgia to the Seattle Mariners
Seattle Mariners pitching prospect Thomas Higgins joins Mariners Down Under to share the story behind his journey into professional baseball.
Thomas takes us back to growing up and playing high school baseball in South Georgia, where he didn’t always receive the exposure afforded to players from bigger baseball areas, before earning his opportunity at Georgia Southern.
We talk about his high school career, his longtime connection with JD Kaiser, overcoming injury in college, returning to put together a strong final season and the surprise of hearing his name called by the Seattle Mariners in the 2024 MLB Draft.
Thomas also discusses his first experiences in professional baseball, transitioning from starter to reliever, developing his pitching arsenal within the Mariners organisation and what he hopes the next chapter of his career looks like.
A great conversation with another young arm making his way through the Seattle Mariners system.

Inside Mariners Scouting with Ty Holub | Finding George Kirby & Future Seattle Talent
What does a Major League scout actually look for when trying to find the next Seattle Mariner?
This week on Mariners Down Under, Nate is joined by Seattle Mariners scout Ty Holub for a fascinating look behind the curtain at the world of professional baseball scouting.
Ty takes us through how he became a scout, what his process looks like when evaluating players, how relationships are built long before draft day and why the Mariners place such a strong emphasis on finding not only talented players — but high-quality people.
We also dive into some of the players Ty has crossed paths with along the way, including the incredible story of scouting George Kirby at Elon before he became a cornerstone of the Mariners rotation.
Plus, we talk Grant Knipp, what stood out about him at Campbell and the upside Seattle saw in his game, as well as Australian Jarrod Belbin and his journey from Campbell into the Mariners organisation.
It’s a rare look at the people working behind the scenes to identify, understand and ultimately help build the future of the Seattle Mariners.
