Session 2 – The Book of James: Seeing People the Way Jesus Does

In Session 2 of our study through the Book of James, we turn to James 2:1–13 and examine a challenging question: Do we see people the way Jesus does? James confronts favoritism and the tendency we all have to assign value to people based on appearance, success, position, influence, personality, or what they can do for us. But following Jesus should fundamentally change the way we view the people around us. Throughout this session, we look at how easily the world’s standards can make their way into the church—and even into our own relationships. The successful, confident, or influential person can quickly receive our attention, while the struggling, awkward, overlooked, or hurting person can become almost invisible. James reminds us that this kind of favoritism is incompatible with genuine faith in Christ. We also explore how Jesus consistently noticed the people others overlooked. He welcomed the outcast, stopped for those everyone else passed by, and extended dignity and mercy to people who had nothing to offer Him in return. James ultimately points us toward the “royal law”: Love your neighbor as yourself. Biblical love is not based on usefulness, status, similarity, or what we can gain from another person. Instead, we are called to remember how much mercy and grace we ourselves have received. This session challenges us to ask some difficult questions: Who do I naturally notice? Who do I naturally overlook? Do I treat people differently based on what I think they can do for me? Who has God placed in front of me that I have failed to truly see? James closes this section with the powerful reminder that “mercy triumphs over judgment.” Men who have received mercy should become men who know how to extend mercy to others. Our goal should be to become the kind of men who notice people, make room for others, refuse to measure someone’s worth by worldly standards, and increasingly learn to see people the way Jesus sees them. Session 1 – The Book of James: Tested Faith

James 1:1–12 What happens when life puts weight on the faith we claim to have? In Session 1 of our new study through the Book of James, we begin with James 1:1–12 and examine what happens when our faith is tested through trials, uncertainty, disappointment, and pressure. James presents a no-nonsense picture of discipleship. He is not interested in a faith that simply sounds good—he is interested in a faith that actually changes how we live. In this session, we discuss: • How trials reveal what our faith is actually built on • Why testing can produce endurance and spiritual maturity • Why God's work in our lives does not always mean easier circumstances • The difference between demanding answers and asking God for wisdom • How trials expose where we have placed our identity • Why our identity must ultimately be rooted in Christ rather than careers, money, accomplishments, or circumstances • What it looks like to continue trusting God when life does not go according to plan Untested faith can make a lot of claims. Tested faith reveals what is actually there. The question James forces us to consider is simple: Can my faith carry weight? When the prayer goes unanswered, the plan falls apart, the money gets tight, the opportunity disappears, or God does not do what we expected—will we continue to trust Him? The goal is not a faith that merely sounds impressive when life is easy. The goal is a faith that can carry weight when life gets heavy. Join us as we begin our journey through the Book of James and discover what genuine, lived-out faith looks like.

Session 5 – Love as Leadership: The Measure of a Man

Mountain Men – Session 5: Love as Leadership | The Measure of a Man In the final session of this Mountain Men series, we ask one of the most important questions a Christian man can ask: How well do I love? A man can be successful, respected, knowledgeable, disciplined, and even spiritually impressive—but according to 1 Corinthians 13, without love, something essential is missing. In this session, we look at what Christlike love actually looks like and how it should shape the way men lead their families, marriages, churches, friendships, and communities. Using 1 Corinthians 13:4–7, John 13:1–17 and 34–35, and Ephesians 5:25, we examine how Jesus modeled leadership through sacrifice and service. We discuss: Why biblical love is more than a feeling Why real love often becomes most visible when it costs us something How loving leadership requires us to die to ourselves What it means for husbands and fathers to lead sacrificially Why Jesus led from a towel, not a throne How authority, strength, influence, and resources should be used to serve others Why the people closest to us should actually experience our love How presence, patience, attention, forgiveness, and sacrifice shape our legacy Jesus showed us that leadership is not about privilege—it is about responsibility. The King of Kings knelt to wash feet. The Lord became a servant. The One who deserved everything gave everything. That is our example. As men, we are called to lead—but to lead like Jesus. Use your strength to serve. Use your authority to lift others. Speak truth in love. Protect your family, but also make sure they experience your tenderness. Work hard, but do not give your career what belongs to your family. This session challenges us to ask: Do the people closest to me experience the love of Jesus through the way I live? And ultimately: Did I love the people God entrusted to me well? That is the measure of a man. This week’s challenge is simple but difficult: ask someone close to you, “What is one way I could love you better?”Then listen without defending yourself—and act on what they tell you. The goal is not perfection. It is transformation—day by day, decision by decision, surrender by surrender, allowing the Holy Spirit to make us more like Jesus.
