DETEST: the patient has entered the room
MDNTMRKTVOX — SEASON 2.7 DETEST: The Patient Has Entered the Room A reading from the debut novel by Monet Marcel by Delray + conversation Detroit transmitting. Everybody wants a diagnosis. Nobody wants to be discovered. For Season 2.7 of MDNTMRKTVOX, Monet Marcel by Delray enters the examination room with a reading from the debut novel DETEST, a clinical-literary work in which the person telling the story, the person recording it, and the person being observed are never quite the same person. The episode begins with “The Room,” where Julian enters an imperfect clinical office and immediately begins examining the examiner. A crooked degree. Frayed carpet. An opalescent lamp. A sailor with a missing ear. A notebook waiting to turn somebody into evidence. Before the clinician can diagnose Julian, Julian has already begun diagnosing the room. From there, the reading moves into WELCOME and DIFFERENTIAL, where the novel begins pulling apart the comfortable distinction between case history and autobiography. Bipolar disorder. Schizoaffective disorder. Methamphetamine use. Psychosis. Personality. Grief. Memory. Performance. Addiction. None is allowed to become the answer simply because somebody once wrote it down. DETEST asks what happens when diagnosis becomes narrative, when narrative becomes evidence, and when evidence becomes identity. And Julian is particularly dangerous to easy interpretation because he knows he is being watched. He performs. He edits. He remembers. He lies. He corrects himself. He makes jokes exactly when the room gets too close. And sometimes he tells the truth in a form that looks suspiciously like fiction. The reading follows those contradictions through cigarettes and family memory, fathers and grandfathers, Mississippi, masculinity, addiction, inherited gestures, responsibility, and the strange human habit of trying to turn objects into containers for people we cannot keep. A cigarette becomes an uncle. A brand becomes a father. Smoke becomes an archive. And diagnosis keeps arriving with a clipboard asking whether any of this can please fit into the appropriate box. It cannot. AFTER THE READING Following the reading, the conversation turns toward the machinery underneath DETEST: How much authority should we give the narrator? How much authority should we give the clinician? When does observation become surveillance? When does performance become protection? Can addiction explain behavior without excusing it? Can a diagnosis describe someone without becoming the total noun by which everyone else understands them? And what happens when the clinician begins recognizing themselves inside the person they are supposed to be observing? The discussion also considers Julian’s relationship to adulthood and masculinity: his desire for permanence alongside his insistence on keeping an exit available; his hunger to be known alongside his refusal to remain knowable; and the possibility that what appears to be instability may sometimes be a person desperately preserving the right to change. At the center of the episode is the question underneath the novel’s second title: ⠁⠞⠽⠉⠓⠊⠏⠓⠕⠃⠊⠁ Atychiphobia. Fear of failure. But whose failure? The patient’s? The clinician’s? The diagnosis? The family? The treatment? The story? Or the failure involved in trying to make another human being completely legible? DETEST refuses to settle the matter. Good. That would be far too easy. CONTENT NOTE This episode contains discussion of substance use and addiction, methamphetamine, psychiatric diagnosis, psychosis, grief, death, family trauma, sexuality, mental health treatment, and questions of personal responsibility. ABOUT THE BOOK DETEST is the debut novel by Monet Marcel by Delray, published within the MDNT MRKT literary universe. Part clinical record, part confession, part argument about who possesses a life once that life has been documented, the novel asks whether a person can survive being accurately observed without eventually becoming somebody else’s interpretation. The question is not simply what is wrong with Julian. The question is who is taking notes. SIGNAL PERSON: THE PLAY HAS THREE LIVES
MDNTMRKTVOX | SHOW NOTES SIGNAL PERSON: THE PLAY HAS THREE LIVES Written & performed by Monet Marcel by DelrayMDNTMRKTVOX × MDNT MRKT RAW × MDNTMRKT PRESS Time passes. The work remains. Sometimes the page simply waits for somebody to enter the room. In this episode of MDNTMRKTVOX, Monet Marcel by Delray announces the publication of four dramatic works through MDNT MRKT RAW, the dramatic-literature imprint of MDNTMRKT PRESS: DIGGERS • CRAZY/BLUE • LOON • PALMER PARK: BOIS The episode begins where the plays begin: inside a room that already remembers something. From there, SIGNAL PERSON: THE PLAY HAS THREE LIVES becomes part publishing announcement, part audio essay, part theatrical experiment, and part invitation back into the Detroit theatre community. At its center is an argument about the stage play on paper. A play does not possess only the life it receives in performance. It has at least three: the work written by the playwright, the work embodied by actors and collaborators, and the private production created inside the imagination of the person reading the script. The episode also enters the stranger territory of Monet Marcel by Delray’s stage directions: directions that can know more than the characters, speak directly to the reader, describe emotional temperature rather than physical movement, and preserve information a theatre audience may never literally hear. And then there is DIGGERS. After years of iterations, DIGGERS is being brought forward again for a Detroit-area live reading connected to the December 2026 release of The Stage Plays. MDNT MRKT RAW is seeking actors, readers, theatre artists, students, Deaf performers, and collaborators from across Metro Detroit interested in helping the play acquire another body. This will not simply be a conventional book-release party. The intention is to put the published object and performed text in the same room: book release, reading, revival, archive, and experiment at once. The old play does not return unchanged. Neither does the playwright. Neither does Detroit. That is precisely the point. Monet meets Opal
Recorded live.No studio audience. No script. No edits to manufacture certainty. MDNT MRKT VOX documents conversations as they unfold, preserving hesitation, interruption, laughter, silence, and revision. Each episode functions as an audio field note, capturing the trace of thought before it hardens into narrative. Featuring OpalJoining Monet Marcel by Delray is Opal, whose voice provides a second point of gravity throughout the conversation. Rather than serving as an interviewer alone, Opal becomes an active participant, asking questions, challenging assumptions, and helping excavate the ideas beneath the surface. Together they move between observation, memory, philosophy, and the ordinary moments that quietly shape a life.
