BETWEEN HORIZONS: The Evening Star Becomes the Morning Star A Venus Meditation for Venus Retrograde
What happens when something disappears from one horizon only to emerge upon another?
Venus has fascinated human beings for thousands of years. Because her orbit lies inside Earth’s, there are periods when we see Venus shining brilliantly after sunset as the Evening Star and others when she appears before sunrise as the Morning Star. As Venus approaches inferior conjunction, she becomes lost in the brilliance of the Sun before eventually emerging into the predawn sky.
The same Venus.A different horizon.
Ancient cultures watched these movements long before telescopes could explain what was happening. Venus became intertwined with mythology, divinity, beauty, desire, fertility, war, death and renewal. In ancient Mesopotamia, for example, the planet was associated with the goddess Inanna/Ishtar, whose identity encompassed both the morning and evening appearances of Venus.
This meditation asks us to reconsider something about the way we approach the cosmos today.
Modern spiritual conversations can sometimes drift into what I playfully call “cosmic narcissism”: the assumption that every retrograde, conjunction, full moon, eclipse or planetary movement must be happening to us, carrying a personalized message about our relationships, careers, healing or destiny.
But what if the cosmos does not need to revolve around us in order for us to find meaning within it?
Venus is not retrograding at you.
She is moving.
We are observing.
And perhaps there is something beautiful about allowing ourselves to participate in that mystery without requiring ourselves to be its center.
Our ancestors looked upward with reverence, curiosity, mythology and wonder. Tonight, we do the same.
In Between Horizons, we follow Venus from Evening Star into invisibility and eventually toward her emergence as Morning Star. Along the way, we explore the uncomfortable spaces in our own lives when something familiar can no longer be found where it once appeared.
There is nothing you need to release tonight.
Nothing you need to manifest.
Nothing you need to figure out.
Perhaps some transformations do not need to be understood while they are happening.
Sometimes we are simply between horizons.
A note on astrology and astronomy:This meditation uses astronomical phenomena alongside mythology and astrological symbolism as tools for contemplation and personal reflection. The astronomical descriptions of Venus’s orbit, phases, inferior conjunction and appearances as the Morning and Evening Star are grounded in observational astronomy.
Wellness disclaimer:This meditation is intended for relaxation, contemplation and personal spiritual practice. It is not psychotherapy, medical treatment, mental health treatment or a substitute for care from a qualified healthcare or mental health professional. Please practice in a safe environment and discontinue the meditation if you become uncomfortable or distressed.
