Paying for Summer Camp: Budgeting, Fundraising, and Earning Your Way to Camp

How does a Scout troop pay for summer camp—and how can Scouts and families prepare for the cost throughout the year? In this episode of Meet Me at the Grizz, host Ken Clough explores summer camp budgeting and fundraising by sharing the approach his troop used to help make Scouts BSA summer camp a year-round financial priority. Rather than suggesting there is one right way to fund summer camp, Ken shares one troop's experience. Their annual troop budget supported normal operating expenses, monthly camping, and summer camp fees for adult leaders, while Scouts and families were given opportunities to “earn their way to camp” through fundraising. You'll hear about: Building summer camp into the troop's annual budget Using fundraising to help Scouts work toward their camp fees Why the troop chose to pay summer camp fees for adult leaders How families with multiple Scouts could benefit from year-round fundraising Keeping summer camp costs and payment deadlines visible throughout the Scouting year Why every troop needs to find a budgeting and fundraising approach that works for its own Scouts and families Summer camp planning isn't only about merit badges, equipment, transportation, and schedules. Figuring out how to pay for summer camp can be part of the planning process too. Whether you're a Scoutmaster, assistant Scoutmaster, troop committee member, parent, or Scout preparing for Scouts BSA summer camp, this episode offers one real-world example of how a troop made funding summer camp part of its year-round program. 🎧 Meet Me at the Grizz is a podcast about Rotary Scout Reservation, Scouts BSA summer camp, Scouting leadership, camp traditions, and creating better summer camp experiences for Scouts and leaders. Because next summer's camp experience starts long before you arrive at camp.

Camp Is Where Scout Leaders Learn, Too

Summer camp is known for helping Scouts earn merit badges, build confidence, and develop outdoor skills, but what do Scout leaders gain from a week at camp? In this episode of Meet Me at the Grizz, Ken Clough shares observations from a summer spent helping around the camp office and explores an often-overlooked part of the Scout camp experience: the informal conversations where Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters, troop committee members, district volunteers, and camp staff exchange ideas, solve problems, and learn from one another. From discussions about troop organization, Scoutbook, Black Pug, fundraising, and committee structure to conversations about Wood Badge, camporees, and district events, camp becomes more than a place for youth development; it becomes a week-long leadership experience for adult volunteers. Whether you're an experienced Scouter or preparing to attend Scout camp with your troop for the first time, discover why camp isn't just where Scouts learn; it's where Scout leaders learn, too. In this episode: Why Scout camp is a leadership development experience for adults How informal conversations strengthen troops The value of networking with other Scout leaders Ideas shared about troop organization, fundraising, and advancement Why every adult leader should consider attending Scout camp If you enjoy thoughtful conversations about Scouting, summer camp, troop leadership, and the traditions that shape the Scouting experience, be sure to follow Meet Me at the Grizz and share this episode with another Scout leader.
